Even though I have been in the auto refinishing then auto detailing industry since I was about 6 years old I decided to attend the I-CAR auto detailing course.
I thought it would be nice to have the certification from the class.
The class was held at Moss Bros. Dodge in Riverside, Ca.
The class was set up in the showroom and taught by “zone instructor” Mark Torres.
The class is very fast paced. There isn’t any hands on.
The class seemed to be set up as a review of what the attendees should probably already know.
Mr. Torres covered washing, color sanding, buffing, polishing and interior detailing in about two and ½ hours.
He spoke very well and gave the attendees plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
He also used a power point presentation along with short video clips.
Even though at the beginning of the class we were asked not to discuss specific brands, I did notice that at least 90% of the material used in the power point and video were Meguiars products.
I found I-CARS position on a few things very interesting. I learned what various vehicle manufactures recommended on how best to correct various paint defects as well.
I also learned some things about a powder that will be disbursed into a vehicles interior after an air bag has been inflated and how to correctly clean it.
When the instruction portion of the class was over we were given a 25 question test.
I found out then that this class was just one of many that make up a paint refinishing course. A certification is given for completion of the entire course and not just for the detailing class I took.
We were given a copy of the power point/video on a CD and a two page auto detailing check list to keep.
This class certainly isn’t for the enthusiast. I already knew 99% of the material but taking the time to go out and learn the 1% and adding it to my already extensive experience and training is what has kept me in business for over 16 years.
Was it worth the $90? I think so.
