  • Health Insurance for self employed

    Hey guys!

I'm thinking about ditching this corporate rat race and pursuing my passion full time with detailing!

One of my concerns is the cost of insurance for a self employed small business owner. I'll be turning 30 in June with no medical problems (could lose some weight), and I was wondering if you guys have insurance, and where you have found the best rates.

Are there special groups to join to get discounts on insurance? Just curious.

    Thanks!

Mine is through Assurant Health (formerly Fortis). I pay $205 a month, $2000 deductible, they pay 80% to $5000, 100% after that, $8 million lifetime cap, I get reduced rates on office visits, presciptions, vision care, etc. I am 44 and in pretty good health, non-smoker, non-drinker.

Canada's "free" healthcare isn't "free". Ever wonder where that 40% in taxes go? The system itself is also joke, but that's another thread.

In NY we have Healthy NY, which is reduced rate insurance. There's several plans to choose from. It's for lower income people but they also will give it to you if you're self employed. My cost is ~120/month. It's not the greatest plan but it will cover anything major. Two of my friends parents are also doctors so I get a lot of "perks".

          Contact your State Insurance Commission

They usually have assistance or low cost plans available.

The one in Massachusetts is located at

Forgot about this- Contact the Chamber of Commerce. If you join it, they have some type of discounted insurance also.

Is there such thing as "real" health insurance any more? When I was under my dad's insurance (gov't employee) we had 0 copays on dr. visits and medicine, and litterally every thing was covered down to alternative medicine. I was so nice not being nickle and dimed to death with copays. These HMOs are jokes. I've been on Allegra forever and it's the only thing that puts a dent in my allergies. When I had insurance at my old job, I got a letter from the HMO saying they weren't going to pay for it any more and they would only cover generic prescription Clairaton unless I had a full written medical explaination from the dr.

lol Canadian taxes are real high, lol

                    Sorry, I just couldn't resist!

Personally, after seeing how poorly the government runs almost everything else, I definitely don't want them in charge of my health care.
