  • So what do you do during the cold months?

I turn this question over and over in my head all the time when im considering opening my own business...
I live in PA and wanted to know, what do you guys/girls do during the colder months?
Those of you who do this for a living, when the cold weather hits...I cant imagine alot of people wanting to have their cars detailed, nor can I see alot of detailers who dont have an actual fixed location, wanting to do the work.

Do you go to dealers and work your butt off for wholesale costs?

    Put it on hold?

    what....?

Not cold enough here to prevent me from working, although detailing on days when it doesn't get out of the 30s is very uncomfortable. Luckily, this winter has been much warmer than normal. The main problem is in the winter we can get slow moving fronts and 5 days straight of rain, or arctic fronts and a day or two of cold weather and snow, sleet or ice. I just catch up on household chores on those days.

You might look into doing boat details in the winter, usually people in colder climates pull speedboats out and store them indoors.

That's a fairly common question and because of this there is a thread on this topic on the Hot Topics forum here,

Im actually in this situation now.Im starting my business full time and its the middle of winter right now.I spend more time on the computer now than ever.Learning as much as possible.Talking to numerous dealers and they want to pay less than my products are worth.I detail occasionally in the winter. But for every inch of snow we have four inches of salt on the roads.I think detailing is like construction you bust youre hump in the summer and make most of the winter.I also have a 3year old daughter so I spend as much time as I can with her and save on winter day care.Nobody I talk to in the business says its easy.Good luck with the decision.
