  • Paint Thickness Gauge

    Hey everyone,
I had a question I was hoping for some advice on, I have been seeking a resonably priced paint thickness gauge for a while now, and Ebay has this model for sale, is anyone familiar with the QuaNix 427? It's about 200 bucks cheaper than any new ETG meters I've seen and it claims to be able to do Steel and Aluminum.

    Thanks,
    Tom

Oh boy, no I don't know anything about that one, but...it doesn't exactly look like it's in the same class of instrument as the others available.

I'd sure like to know if it works accurately on aluminum panels! Like Setec, I'm sorta suspicious based on looks and price...

The unit pictured appears to be a house branded version of the Quanix "Handy" model. I would presume that the low cost comes from this being their least sensitive unit.

The "Handy" has a read resolution of 0.5 mils. That's not particularly useful for detailers since the difference between a fresh OEM finish and one that has been buffed to minimum acceptable thickness is about 0.5 mils.

It's useful for wholesale buyers who just want to look for a refinish or body fillers but for detailing I would want at least 0.1 mil resolution. Quanix makes other models that cost more and have 0.01 mil to 0.1 mil resolution.

              Hello,

I Noticed your inquiry to paint thickness guages. I have several used (but look like brand new) Pro Motor Car ETG units for sale. These all have the print option, which is an added bonus. I am asking $250.00. I have one on ebay right now.
