  • good trick to remove swirls

I work in a body shop, and our prepper and I were talking about buffing on the new paint; and instead of using swirl mark remover, you can use in a spray bottle, half water, and half rubbing alcohol. Spray the panel and then wipe it off. Poof no swirls. I just thought I would share this with you all.

I was under the impression that a 50/50 mix of water/isopropyl alchohol was commonly used to "reveal" swirls and other defects.

I have not had a chance to use this mixture on anything yet.

Re: "Spray the panel and then wipe it off. Poof no swirls."

I'll take six gallons and three squirt bottles, please!

Maybe to remove smudges... Not swirls.

To remove residue, fillers and leave a clean panel so you can see the swirls or other defects...yes.

If this is true, someone call Mike. He might be looking for work.

And to think after all those hundreds of hours of buffing and polishing paint, all I need was some water and alcohol!

As soon as I read "I work in a body shop..." I knew this wasn't going to be good....

When are these poor body shop folks going to learn?

hey I never saw it up close, so if he is full of it, let me know. He said that it pulls the cmpound out, to leave a clean surface. I always polish my panels to eliminate swirls,

but hey I'm glad he really is an *****! (Edited for breaking the fourm rules - Mike).

You can bet on monday I'm gonna tell him too.

                        alcohol/water for swirls

The prep guy at the shop probably is a really smart guy! (Edited by Mike). I have never used this method, I just wanted some input on the idea. I have been a detailer for 14 years, and have never had a problem with swirls. So hey I'll tell the good friend of mine! (Edited by Mike) that he needs to get out of the field he is in, and go work for McDonalds.

                          Good for you

You should find out after 14 yrs what water/alcohol does to a polished car

I think what he meant was after you polish/compound you can use an alcohol/water mix to quickly remove any polish that might be left behind to reveal a perfectly clean surface. Its still the polish/compound doing all the work to remove the swirls, not the alcohol.

Hey if you know what you are doing then it really doesn't matter. I'm gonna let this good friend of mine! (Edited by Mike) know that he needs to learn what to do.
