  • Marring and scouring meanings, And SRC's

    Hi mike:

las day I was surfin' on the web and found a page called autopia, and they used the word "marring" for lots of fine scratches in the paint. I also know you use scouring too. but, is there any other way these two words can be used in the automotive detailing terms?

also, I was looking at 3M's site and saw a new polish called SRC, which is formulated for Scratch Resistance Clearcoats.

when I saw it, I remembered that in the "how to remove paint defects" video, you talked about new technologies regarding clear coat finishes.

my question about this is: are Diamond cut compound and Compound power cleaner able to remove defects from these new clearcoats?

I hope you can answer my question. thanks

I'm one of the guys responsible for the widespread use of "marring" in the detailing context. Marring is a catch-all term; the idea behind this was to have an all-encompassing term for below-surface defects, i.e., "scratches" or "gouges" in the paint.

All forms of swirls, "spiderwebs", holograms, hazing, scratches, scouring....anything that's a fissure, valley, or pit cut (or otherwise induced) into the otherwise smooth topmost surface of the paint would be "marring". The only functional difference between these defects is their severity.

All forms of marring are removed the same way- through abrasion. The variations in severity call for variations in the aggressiveness of the remedial actions and products.

Marring can mean light scuffs of scratches, usually very shallow, it can also mean dull areas on the finish where something has rubbed against the paint and dulled it. It can also mean material transfer to the paint, for example if you don't through your electric cord over your shoulder and as you're buffing the cord rubs against the paint, it can impart itself or mar the finish.

      Hi Chex,

Yes, Meguiar's Diamond Cut Compound and M84 Compound Power Cleaner as well as all the products in our 80's series will remove defects out of new paint technologies such as Scratch Resistant Clearcoats.
