  • w9006 finishing pad "cracks" around edge

Just finished first full clay/polish/wax and the results are very nice. Thanks for the help with the newbie questions.

I got a 3 pad kit from Meguiars a few months ago & this was the first use.

The polishing pads are fine but the finishing pad w9006 has developed a "crack" or separation around most of the back side of the pad - just about 1/2 inch out from the velcro backing bit.

This after 1 use on 1 car. Are the w9006 extremely fragile and meant to be sort of disposable? Is there a warranty on them?

    Thanks

Did you catch it on something?

What type of backing plate do you have (I'm wondering if it dug into the pad).

The ones I have for my rotary and my DA have lasted months or longer, depending on how often they're used.

No I don't think I caught it on anything. I did a Corvette all pretty smooth flowing surfaces. The backing plate is Porter Cable brand that came with the da. It is a 6inch backing plate and the counter weight is for 6 inch.

What size is the backing plate on the G100 Meguiars branded PC polisher?

I ran at 4.5 for polish and 5 for wax per another forum member's suggestion.

Results are great, the pad just took a dump?

Meguiar's are 5" and 6" for the DA. Those W9006 pads are soft. Did the backing plate you have pull any pieces of the foam when you removed it?

        Just theories, really

No the pad came off ok, I was careful pulling it off.

I'd say to get in contact with customer service, either on this forum or on the toll free number. They're very helpful and stand behind their products. They might know something we've not discussed.

              Hey,

The damage to the pad usually happens from too large of backing plate, too much downward pressure on the buffer and/or running the G100 higher than the recommended speed of #5.

I would suggest using the G100 at no faster than #5, and use Meguiar's backing plate W-64DA.

                I agree with Tim,

The separation or crack as you call it is caused by your backing plate rubbing too hard into the foam.

                * You either pushed too hard.
                * Ran the polisher over the 5.0 setting
                * Used the wrong backing plate

and possibly any combination of the above or all of the above.

I have boxes of pads from our Saturday detailing classes and none of them look like that.

I did a similar thing with the first pad I ever used. I had seen where folks had used the Rotary to sling the access outta the pad. At the time, I had no Rotary so figured I would do it with the DA. I ran that puppy up to 6 and rolled. Then the pad flew about 40' and I had to fetch it out of my neighbor's hedges. As a result of this aeronautical hedge polishing, I had developed a tear in the pad that appears to be identical to yours.

Could it be that you had the speed up a bit to high and lifted it off the surface on to many times?

Thanks for the post. I guess I'll chalk it up to something I did. It does not seem that there are massive problems with that pad, just a few here & there.

I may call cust. svc. tomorrow & see if they are willing to do any adjustment. Those puppies are not cheap.

Worth a shot.. Always possible it was an old batch. I guess these things "could" dry rot. Not saying thats the case here. I am sure Meg's will bend over backwards to make sure you are satisfied.

I have tons of pads that look like that-WHY?

Because I use a non-meguiars approved over sized backing plate and sometimes crank the PC up tp 6 to remove some defects. My older (4-5 month old) pads can't hang and come apart. Keep in mind my pads are used 3-4 times a day for months.

                            Thanks for the reply,

I'm just a little surprised that it "cracked" with ONE use

I emailed cust. svc. & they called me Monday (the next day) and are sending a replacement pad.

Is this a GREAT company or what. Thanks Meguiars
