  • question about swirl marks

hi. i just started using meguiar products and not really familiar with them. I have a dark blue truck and i just bought it a couple of weeks ago. I noticed some light swirl marks on the top of doors both front and back, the back panels and the trunk. it isn't much, but will the DC#1 work for that. On Megs website it states that it removes swirls and cleans the paint? HELP

The answer is yes and no depending on how deep the swirls are, how hard the paint is and how you apply the product, that is your technique and your applicator material will play a big part in what you can, and what you cannot do with this product.

One thing for sure, anytime you're removing swirls and scratches[/i], you're removing paint. This means no matter what product you're using you have to do more than merely wipe it on and wipe it off.

If you want to remove swirls and scratches by hand, then you will get better results if you use a product like ScratchX.

    From the Hot Topics forum.

What it means to remove a scratch out of anything...

In order to remove a scratch out of anything, metal, plastic glass, paint, etc. You must remove material around the scratch until the surface is level or equal to the lowest depths of the scratch or scratches.

The below diagram if for paint, the the same thing applies to just about an surface material or coating.

In essences, you don't really remove a scratch, you remove material around a scratch.

Then the big question is, is the material or coating workable, as in can you abrade small particles of it and leave behind an original looking surface. For example, some things you can abrade, (remove the scratch), but you can never completely remove all of your abrading marks, thus you can't really fix the problem, all you can do is exchange one set of scratches of a different set of scratches.

The next questions is, how thick is the surface material you're working on or the coating. You are limited to what you can do by the thickness of these to things, (surface coating or surface material), and whether or not this surface is workable.

Sometimes you don't know what you can so until you try. It's always a good idea to test your choice of products, applicator materials and application process, (By hand or by machine), to an inconspicuous area. If you cannot make a small area look good with your product, applicator and process, you will not be able to make the entire surface look good. It's always a good idea to test first and error on the side of caution, versus make a mistake you cannot undo.

thanks for your reply mike. I have another question? What does the dc#1 do? From what I read, it says that it removes swirls and cleans the paint. Would you please describe the product to me?

It is mainly a chemical cleaner. That is chemicals get into the pores of the paint, lifting out dirt.

To remove swirls, you have to have something abrasive that will remove some paint to level out the swirl/scratch.

If you use a pad that is a little abrasive, like a terry cloth, or PC, then the DC#1 becomes abrasive enough to remove very light swirls.

This is why ScratchX, or even ColorX which is milder, are better at removing swirls. They have diminishing abrasives, that allow the swirls to be removed easier.

For removing swirls/scratches on your paint, ScratchX is definately the way to go.

Murr1525 nailed it, basically Deep Crystal Cleaner is a safe and gentle paint cleaner. It cleans any unwanted stains or contaminants off the surface cleaning the paint surface so that you can better polish it and so that wax can better adhere or bond to it.

It's a light cleaner, that's all but that's enough. Sometimes all you really need when working on a finish is a light cleaner, and for this job this is the tool.

I know sometimes people stumble over this as it's so simple and un-complex, but that's the beauty of it, a light cleaner for light cleaning.
