  • Rotary Recommendation ?

I've been offered a really good deal on a Milwaukee 5455 rotary. From all indications this machine is NOT a variable speed. Specs state 1750 rpm under load. From what I've read here at MOL recommended speeds are around 1200 rpm on the average. Should I shy away from the 5455 or will it be ok ? Keep in mind that I've been using the PC 7424 but still a newbie overall

    Thanks

I have a "one speed" 1750rpm that I didn't feel comfortable with as a new user. It was GIVEN to me, and I've never used it. Instead I got an inexpensive Chicago Electric rotary and used it off and on over the course of a year, until I was comfortable with the tool. I just did some research and bought a Makita through ebay.

I am confident that had I chosen a DeWalt or a Hitachi, my other choices, I would be just as well off.

The difference between the CE and the more expensive tools is like the difference between cars from the '50s and cars today. Both will get you around town just fine, but the older tool/car is heavier, rougher, and less efficient in its action.

I used that same buffer for over 12-13 years until I got a dewalt. It will get the job done but a lighter variable speed polisher is the way to go.

You can find used DeWalts on Ebay for about $100. I have purchased three over the last couple of years and havn't had any problems with them.

I got my NEW Makita for $122.50 plus $15 shipping. New Hitachis go for around $115.

I actually got a new Porter Cable 7428 Rotary off of ebay for 120.00 after shipping about a year ago and really like it. Not sure why the Porter Cable is not very popular though among rotary buffers, DeWalt and Makita seem to be more popular.

Everyone I've heard of who's used the 7428 has loved it. I'm really tempted to get one myself.

I think the main reason you don't see them too often is marketing. Porter-Cable doesn't really have that big a presence in the PBE world. You really see them heavily promoted in the construction and woodworking industries.

Plus, with DeWalt locked in mortal combat with Makita in the body shop market I doubt the honchos at B&D would push new competition for their own products.
