I am attempting to detail an 85 Mercedes 190E. Does anyone know if the OEM wheels are clear coated? I have completed the paint and it looks great but the wheels are cast alum and they are black and yellow stained. THe previous owner just left if out in San Francisco and did not take care of it and it looks like the sea air got to the wheels. Any suggestions? Thanks.

From my experience, yes, that is the case. But I would still get a second opinion...
The Nxt metal polish is safe for metal, and clear coats.. so you would be ok either way if you are using it.2017 Subaru WRX Premium - WR BlueComment

The black might be [stuff] getting cleaned off, it doesn't always automatically mean you're dealing with bare aluminum. I'd sure hate to ruin the wheels so be careful.
German car makers used various types of fragile finishes (including clear anodizing) during those days and it's easy to mess them up with the wrong approach. I only had earlier and later Benzes, so I dunno about the '85s.
In any case, I'd treat them like paint (clay, mild cleaners, etc.), I'm quite sure they are *not* bare aluminum. If they're anodized you need to be *very* careful. Cleaning them up could make them look worse after a few weeks if you use the wrong approach.Practical PerfectionistComment
