I am completely new to detailing, so please excuse this (and future) dumb questions. Concerning tires, what is the best to clean them with - a brush? What should I then use to keep them looking nice (I'm not sure if I'd prefer a matte or a glossy finish)? Thanks in advance for any help!

Meguiar's offers an aerosol foam tire cleaner. The foam doesn't just run off the tires so you have time to work the cleaner/foam against the rubber to clean the tire. The nice thing about this foaming cleaner is it won't stain or harm your wheels, or any other component in the wheel well area.
NEW NXT Generation Tire Cleaner
To scrub the foaming tire cleaner, Meguiar's has introduced a new tire brush with a handle that you can either use or remove and if you choose to use it you can change the angle of the handle to the head position.

Another bonus to the bristle design of this particular brush is the fact that the outside bristles are softer than the inside bristles to enable you to scrub the tire without the fear of scratching your rims.
