  • Liberating a Liberty

    Hi Folks -

Yesterday I picked up a used '02 Jeep Liberty 4wd to be used as my daily driver. My '94 S10 needs to be put out of its misery and my Saleen is not eligible to be driven in the rain, let alone the snow that will be on the way soon.

This is a black Jeep with leather interior. The exterior is full of fine scratches, probably as a result of the dreaded drive-thru car wash. There are also so noticeable waterspots that need to be addressed.

My plan is to use this "new" car as a way to further my detailing skills and I'm interested in your recommendations. My options are:

    1. Attack the sucker by hand, wash, clay, hit it hard with ScratchX and see how far I get until my arms fall off.

    2. **** it up and buy myself a DA and all the appropriate goodies and go at it that way probably starting with #83.

    3. Crate the thing up and send it to Joe at Superior Shine, have a beer (or several), and wait for the miraculous transformation that surely would occur.

    1. and 2. above are realistic - 3. isn't but it's fun to think about.

Anyway, I'm interested in thoughts, appropriate links related to restoring a difficult black finish. This forum is tremendous and has taught me so much already - thanks to all who so willingly share their knowledge here!

The G100 is a great machine to have around, but hell a tube of scratch X, a couple of aplicators, a polish, a wax, and some toweling aren't all that expensive so give it a try!

Either of the above two choices will work, the second one is the one I would recommend since it's obvious you're car crazy and because the Jeep is black you'll be amazed at the results you can achieve by machine versus your hand.

Certainly the DA will rasie your results to another level in less time.

Keep in mind that even with a DA, ScratchX will be your friend for little spot touchups, and spots where a foam pad may not reach correctly.

Go for the DA, you will not regret it

IMO, if you plan on working on several cars, go for the DA, if you are just doing 1 car, go the the scratch x.

Unless you have good technique that comes from experience & training with the DA, you will probably get results faster with the scratch x. Also, if you are just doing 1 car, you can buy a lot of product for the price of the DA.
