  • Black bumpers

I have a '89 Tercel with black bumpers made of some material I can't really identify.

It seems like halfway between plastic and rubber.

    With time, they're becoming gray.

I tried various products on them over the years : Armor All, Stoner's trim, Mother's Back to Black, Meguiar's Natural Shine and #40 Vinyl and Rubber and some others I can't remember.

So far the best result achieved was with Armor All, but after a few raindrops, it's completely vanished, just like Mother's BtB.

Vinyl and Rubber did an OK job but that stuff smells so bad... I used it only once in the interior and had to drive with windows open in winter (-15C and below) to avoid headaches (yes it was that bad). I kept the bottle but can't really mind to use it again even on the outside only.

A nice result with correct longevity was Natural Shine. But maybe I'm doing something wrong because I can't seem to apply it evenly.

What would be the best product for this ? Or am I already using it but incorrectly ?

The only way to restore your black bumpers is to repaint them. At work we use a product made by SEM to restore and repaint faded plastic. I'm sure your local PBE store has a aerosol specially made for bumpers, I think they called Bumper Coater.
