  • Seems impossible to get these out...?

    Hi everyone,

First time poster but long, long time Mequires user. My favourites are Ultimate Compound and Fine Cut Cleaner as these have done wonders for me over the years. I am struggling getting some fine scratches out of my 2016 Q5 at the moment. Under my garage lights I can see some fine scratches and I cannot for the life of me get them out using fine cut cleaner or the ultimate compound. I work everything by hand and am seeking some help here. I have even tried some wax to see if that fills them in but nope.... Please have a look at the photo and tell me what you think. Much appreciated.

I can't see your small scratches very clearly and luckily your car's color is dark so these marks don't stand out. My white car also had a few scratches on the front of the car that could not be removed. I thought they were just stains but no matter how I wiped them, they wouldn't go away. It's quite annoying to see them but I seem to have given up because I can't find a solution.

I see what you are referring to here. These will be best removed with a machine, like a Dual Action Polisher, possibly with a more aggressive compound. One is simply limited in what we can get out when working by hand. And it is actually safer to take them out properly with a machine, rather than repeating several times in an area super aggressively by hand.

Meguiar's MT300 Dual Action Polisher is always an option, there are other good random orbital machines out there also. With Meguiar's MT300, we would recommend pairing with our DBP5 5 Inch Backing Plate, our 5 Inch Soft Buff D/A Foam Discs. It's possible our Ultimate Compound paired with a DFC5 Soft Buff D/A Foam Cutting Disc could remove, but it might be a good idea to pick up our DMC5 D/A Microfiber Cutting Discs, along with our D300 D/A Microfiber Correction Compound. We have many videos on this machine and D/A Microfiber Correction System you can reference on our YouTube Channel, just search within the channel.

Just a note that if the scratches have always been there they could be in the paint and not on top of the clear coat/ if that is the case they cannot be removed

Those scratches look a bit deep for hand polishing alone. While Ultimate Compound and Fine Cut Cleaner are great, a dual-action polisher with a cutting pad might give better results. If that's not an option, try multiple light passes instead of heavy pressure by hand. Finish with a sealant or wax for protection. My credentials?
