AND NOW the stupid question. How does this work for finding swirls? My problem is, I have two new vehicles, so I shine the light and see nothing. Are you supposed to hold the light near your line of sight and look into the reflected light dead on or are you supposed to hold the light at an angle till you see something. I hate asking obvious (well maybe to others) Q's like this. But like I said, with a new finish, I don't see anything.

well I could be wrong here but I beleive you want to offset yourself and the light, meaning that you don't want to be directly behind the light but more off to one side of the light as you are shining it onto the vehicle surface. If you stand directly behind the light you will just get a massive reflection of the light shining back at you. Again, i just believe this is how you would approach it from what I have found but these guys know better and will probably tell you the "right" way...LOL

Shine the light onto the finish and move it in-out and at different angles until you see the most defects.

Here you see the scratches because the light is reflecting off of them---------

Here you don't see any because I smoothed out/corrected the paint by buffing it -------------

          Trent and Joe,

Thanks. I probably need to do it on an older car. I tried everything and saw nothing. Plus, with metallic, I just couldn't see anything. I was at a point to take it back, but I now can see in Joe's pictures, what the hub bub is all about with these things. THANX ! !

Maybe you're lucky enough to not have many swirls yet.

Our local Target had the Brinkman Dual Beam light in stock for $25.00.......No sign of it being a clearance item just yet.

Probably not the kind of swirl-finding light under discussion, but I've used my various SureFire flashlights to inspect light in dealership showrooms. Seems like they choose their lighting so that it does *not* show marring but if I shade the area under inspection the SureFires work pretty well.

                                I found mine at Lowe's.

It was in an endcap with other led and xenon flashlights near the checkout lines. Wife smacked me when I picked up one of those "police tactical" lights that were $45 and smaller than my mini maglite!

I have noticed that it is a more general light than a pin point light.
The light seems focused in a larger area rather than a small tight pattern.
