  • Never use an automatic car wash!

WHY? that is a question you would ask...because every time you drive your brake rotors heat up - and a sudden temperature change will damage your rotors - requiring you to resurface them in a best scenario, worst - replacing...that is especially important if you have a German car, BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz...Those rotors are very soft ( I noticed that on my gf's BMW, getting a lot of brake dust)...so, give yourself a favor - don't use an automatic car wash...

It’s no different from driving through a puddle or getting caught in the rain. They’re designed to handle thermal shock. Besides, it’s not like you’ll be blazing straight into the wash tunnel with your rotors glowing red after hot lapping the high banks at Daytona. You’ll be toodling through town, pull up to the wash and parking for a couple minutes while they set you up. The brakes will only be warm by the time water hits them, it won’t hurt them.

The wheels may be a different story. If they spray strong chemical wheel cleaners on hot wheels (or even cool wheels) the results can be disastrous.

The awful black dust is caused by the pad material. Don’t ask me why but the Germans have a preference for friction materials that dust like crazy.

I believe the reasons to avoid automatic washes are paint related.

Some auto washes use brushes that will scratch your paint.

Even the “cloth only” and “touchless” washes are only safe if they are properly operated and meticulously maintained. (Like that’s going to happen down at “Bubba’s Cheap as Dirt Auto Spa”.)

You never know who or what went before you and what came off their car and is going to be deposited on yours.

Commercial car washes often use detergents that are very harsh. Yeah, they’ll get the car clean but it’s not doing your paint any favors. Nor does a commercial wash have any interest in maintaining the integrity of your wax.

Do any of the minimum wage laborers that Bubba hires really have a personal interest in your car? If they did is Bubba encouraging them take the time to do their very best? Is Bubba spending the time and money to train them in the fine points of finish care? Is Bubba springing for the highest quality tools and products available?
