  • Got a new door, but...

    Well, I got my first brand new car in the begining or July (2005 Scion tC) and three days after I got it, someone had already hit it and ran. Fortunately, this is a family forum so I can't go into detail about how angry I was!

    I have been meticulously taking care of my car up to the point where I finially got a change to bring it into the body shop and have my new door put on. This was 11 days ago.

    Now, flash forward to yesterday when I picked up my car. Everything looked good in the 6:30 PM light, but when I got up at it in the 7 AM light, I could clearly see some minor blemises and I guess what you guys would call "holograms."

    There are a few sections of the door and other adjacent panels that had a hologram-like image with a pattern as such:

    //// /// ////// // /// //// ////

    Kind of like that. Some different blemishes showed up in the images, but not the ones I was most concerned about. The picturesdo no justice really as it's an old camera I use at work.

    My question to everyone is, is this something I can do by hand to fix this? Or am I going to need an orbital buffer to fix this. I have zero experience using a D.A. or an Orbital buffer. Zero. None.

    I don't even want to bother bringing my car back to the shop because I don't feel like waiting around for them to get to it (much like how they took their sweet time painting the new door). Besides the fact that if they couldn't do it right the first time and they must of left my door unsealed because my car now smells like paint spray and there's thick white dust in my car (which they tried to clean up, but didn't do too good a job.)

    Anyway, the paint matches and they did a good job, but they messed up the finishing touches.

    What should I do?

    I wonder if that is what is known as fish scaling when it comes to paint on vehicles? It almost looks as though something had rubbed against it as it was being painted??

                Thanks for all your replies guys. I'm still a little freaked out that I spent so much money on a new car and I'm already having paint issues with it...not to mention someone hit it already.

                I've never used a Dual Action polisher, but I'm pretty handy and I pick stuff up quickly. That being said, is it easy to "screw up" using the DA and the M80?

                I have a question for Mike. In your article, when you're talking about the movement of the DA, side to side and up/down, are you lifting it up and placing it back down to do the next row/column that's going to overlap?

                  No need to pick up the DA, just nice smooth movements back and forth.

                  When it is time to reload with cleaner, DO NOT pick up the DA while it is spinning. It will sling cleaner everywhere.

                  And you may not get the best results your first time, obviously. Your best results will probably be on the second or third use once you get the hang of it. That said, you will not make anything worse, or damage anything, as long as you dont drop the DA on your paint.

                  BTW, great car.. would have been nice back in the day... not enough room now.

                      Thanks for all the help guys. I guess I'll pick up a DA soon and work on my skill on an old hood or something...(Wish I didn't get rid of my 95 Jetta a few days ago...)
