  • Layers of Wax

Hi, I was wondering how many layers of wax do you guys generally put after a full detail?

    Two, Three at most.

Well I know most people put 2 right after to stay in uniform, but I mean how many layers do you have before you give your car a full detail again?

Well, I try for a full detail 3-4 times a year.

May car is a daily driver parked outside, so I generaly use the spray wax after each wash, so once every week or two.

Then I use ColorX and Nxt when it seems to need a quick detail.

So it might get 4 or 5 spraywaxes, and one or two ColorX and Nxt combos in between.

        Is that any help?

No it makes sense I was planning to put in another coat of NXT wax. This would be my third coat. So when I feel when the time is right to give my car a full detail. Will all 3 coats of wax be removed entirely?

Say a month or so goes by and you decide to do a full detail. The two biggest variables are: *How much of the protective layer from the last detail is still on the car?, and *What product are you starting with?

If the answers are: 'not much/none' or "anything more aggressive than NXT," then the previous layers of wax will be removed.

IMO, if it has been a long period of time since my last detail (on my personal car) I like to clean it up with a session of DC1/PC. That will remove all wax & contaminates, letting me accurately diagnose what needs to be done next. In most cases all that's needed is a light swirl removal (#9) followed by NXT.

On other cars, #80/#82/#83 can be substituted for the DC1 when the damage is readily visible even before washing since they are all cleaners, but with varying levels of 'cut' (abrasiveness) to them. DC1 has no 'cut' to it.

Well, I need to add a question to this thread because it is somewhat related to layers of wax.

I have had a tendency to wax my vehicles every week or every other week. I am not saying I need to but this time of year, the yard work is all caught up and it is way too soon to be cooped up indoors doing painting, wall papering and so on. Therefore, I like being outside and end up spending that time waxing. Anyways, even though I applied the Deep Crystal 1 and 2 maybe like 3-4 waxings ago I wonder about polishing again. So, now I ask, can I use the DC #2 (polish) every time I wax where it will not remove the wax layer/s already applied? I would like to think that I could apply it and still think I have multiple layers of wax on the finish. Do you get what m asking?

ive read here on the forum, that show car owners like to polish on top of wax, then wax again...so i dont see it being a problem...

Cool. Thanks. I smell a polish/wax session coming up this weekend for me.

BJClarke - I see what you're saying, and my hesitation to that approach is this: If you polish and wax say 2 weeks after a full blown detail, you may potentially be sealing in any contaminants on the paint. While washing will remove some loose contaminants, a paint cleaner is needed.

As Murr1525 pointed out, he uses ColorX then NXT. The ColorX is a Cleaner/polish (I believe), so the dirt particles will be removed with this product whereas a pure polish such as DC 2 would do no such thing.

If I may make a suggestion, #12 or #6 Cleaner/Wax would be a good choice in between full details. I stand by the belief of using a dedicated product for each step, but I think in this case, the cleaner/wax is the right step.

If anyone has any corrections to my statements, please feel free to correct me

Now that you mention it, that too makes sense. I wonder if I am best to re-wax when I have the urge and then when I feel the whole gammit is required; start over either with the DC 1,2 or as you suggest using the Cleaner Waxes. Chances are I will at least use up the DC stuff first. I bought two cans of the Cleaner Wax yesterday from the Katrina Aid and of course, their not here yet. Anyways, I hear you loud and clear what your saying. THANX ! !

PS: I may just experiment on a fender the polish routine then wax. I like to experiment like this all the time. In fact I do it so much, I end up not remembering what it was I did to what part of the vehicle. LOL. I know I could write it down but that would take away from my valued waxing time

Well I know for a fact DC#1 removes all the wax, but does claying actually remove multiple layers of wax off?

Actualy, ColorX is a cleaner/poloish/wax, or cleaner wax for short, so it does add a layer of wax. Then one coat of Nxt gives the perfect 2 coats of wax. (Perfect in a quick way of course).

I agree that I dont like the idea of rubbing in particles. Seems like the the Quick Waxes dont need worked in as much, so you dont rub in dirt as much.

And from what I have heard, the cleaners will remove wax, the clay may remove wax. Clay removes stuff stuck on the paint, I guess stuff that 'sticks up', so if you wax is down tight, with nothing on it, that section of wax wont be removed.
