  • waxing orginal paint on a rx7 85

    hi
first time posting..i really like your forum
i have a 85 rx7 with orginal paint it looks good just dull
i would like to get the paint looking good as possible.
i realize the paint needs cleaned and waxed and a good buffing
    i bought a dewalt buffer
what wax would you recomend that i use on it "Professional wax cleaner" or Nxt?
and could you tell me about what rpm's i should use when appying it.
    thanks
    Don

sounds like the paint is oxidized. I would first clay the wash and clay the paint and then use DC#1 paint cleaner to get rid of the oxidation. From there you can do your swirl removal, and then you can wax. I would be very hisitant about using the dewalt buffer. It is a rotary and you can easily burn through the paint.

Like Greg said, if this isl older, oxidized original paint, trying to do a one-step buff-out using a rotary buffer with a cleaner/was may lead to problems and will undoubtedly leave swirls in the finish.

A safer way to go would be to either do all your work by hand, or invest in a dual action polisher like our G100 dual action polisher and go after the paint using a product like our M80 Speed Glaze.

If you want to tackle this by hand, then here's a thread that will show you the product to use and the order in which to apply them. While the title is how to remove swirls, you could easily substitute the word oxidation for the word swirls as the principals are the same.

How To Remove Swirls By Hand

If you are bent on using a rotary buffer on this finish then you're going to want to get some foam pads such as our W-8006 and possibly our finishing pad the W-9006 and a cleaner polish like the M80 Speed Glaze and a wax but I would recommend applying the wax by hand.

Let us know how you want to approach this and we can help you further. Also, have you ever used detailing clay to clay the finish?

Here's a link to detailing clay,

          Quik Clay System

Here's a link to a an Bronco that was very oxidized that we did an extreme makeover on using basically clay and ColorX, (a strong cleaner/wax), everything was done by hand.

Also, if you haven't read this yet, spend a little time reading and absorbing the information in this thread as it will bring you up to speed on detailing.

                  hi
i just read the Bronco thread
                  beautiful job Mike

i think ColorX and clay is what i need.
i plan on picking them up tommorow

i have a question about the clay though in the bronco thread the clay turned green can the clay be reused or is it a one time use?

i will be more than happy to post before and after pics.
                  when its done
                  thanks again

Clay can be used multiple times until your common sense tell you it looks too dirty to continue to use.

One suggestion would be to go a head and use the ColorX after washing and before claying as this will prevent your clay bar from filling up with dead paint like you see it did to me when I clayed the Bronco.

Normally, you would always clay first to remove the thing sitting on top of the surface, and then use a paint cleaner to remove defects under the surface. I have found with extremely oxidized single stage paints that you are better off to remove most/all of the dead paint first, and then after wiping the finish absolutely clean, go a head and clay.

In one case after using ColorX first by machine, and then claying the finish, we were still pulling up brown gunk off the paint, yet the car was Kawasaki Green!

We actually removed the dead and oxidized paint using ColorX, then clayed, then applied ColorX again and the results were phenomenal!

You might give the above a try, at least on the horizontal surfaces.

Also, not I used a piece of terry cloth to apply and work in the ColorX as the nap, or little cotton loops act like a gentle form of an abrasive and increase the cleaning ability of the ColorX.

                    Best of luck to you!
