what products will clay remove?

About 2 weeks ago i went over my car with the PC and some poorboys SSR1 (light swirl remover), some Meg polish then topped it off with mother's carnuba.

with the long weekend coming up i wanted to go over the car with clay but I'm wondering what the clay will remove as far as products are concerned. will i have to re-polish after I clay? will i have to re-apply wax after I clay???

any comments are appreciated.

Detailing clay remove above surface bonded contaminants and will also remove much of any wax present on the surface, for this reason you'll want to, and need to re-wax.

When you run out of Mother's Carnuba ( I know it is good stuff ), buy Meguiar's Nxt Tech Wax Liquid or Paste.

You won't regret it! It is way better than Carnuba. It gives a more brilliant shine thuough you don't get the exact same wet look. The protection is better too.

Not quite sure why you want to clay the vehicle? If you just polished it a couple of weeks ago with the PC and a light SMR, it should be in pretty good shape.

Clay is a wonderful product and has a fine place in detailing. However, for many, many years, some of us old timers managed to do some excellent detailing work without the help of clay.

Anyhow, as Mike said, it will remove much of the wax from the paint surface. Also, depending on how you use the clay, it may require some light polishing afterwards.

I would wash and dry the vehicle and very lightly run my fingers over the paint to check for roughness. If it feels rough... clay it. If it doesn't... move on to the LSP of your choice.

Exactly, clay makes your paint feel smooth like glass by simply removing contaminates.

Think about it. Removeing contaminates before cleaning and polishing is a good idea because then you aren't buffing the contaminates against the paint.

I just say, clay if it ineeds it... use as needed

yeah you can clay your rims and also your windows. i don't know if i would clay my rims with the same bar as i do my paint, but that's just me..

It will probably take the wax off so I would go over it again.

I have noticed that on stubborn spots after I clay it looks like I wet sanded the paint so I polish and wax to restore the look.

Hey lets say I just clayed my car for the first time and I used only one side of the clay bar would I use the same side ever again?

if it is soiled badly be sure to flip it and work it in, so you will have a fresh side on the clay

Hello LT22,

I would be surprised if you only used one side of the clay for an entire car.

I think the idea is that you use one side then fold the clay, sealing in the debris and revealing 2 clean sides of clay, then do it again as you see it becoming clogged.

You could also try cutting the bar in half that way you have a standby just incase you were to drop the first.
