What pray tell is a backing plate? I keep seeing it referred to and I have no idea what it is.

The backing plate is for either a Rotary or Dual action polisher...the polishing pads attach to it. -
I thought they came with the machine. It looks like I would have to order them. Am I right in thinking that?Comment

They don't always come with the machine... If you order the Meguiars brand Dual Action Polisher then it comes with the proper backing plate. If you go with the Porter Cable brand Dual Action Polisher then you will need to get the backing plate from Meguiars. I have seen a Porter Cable rotary buffer with a backing plate that would work with meguiars pads.Originally posted by Jage
