  • First time post Help w/#40

After several weeks of studying this site, and purchasing a PC 7424 for my birthday
(I deserved it) the big day came and my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee received the full treatment. #80 8006, #83 8006, Gold Class 9006. I was very pleased with the results for the first time. On the plastic exterior door panels a used #40 Vinyl cleaner / conditioner also with good results. Well the next day it rained and the door panels streaked and turned white. They cleaned up okay with a dry cloth. Now for the questions was #40 the wrong product for that application ? If so what product is recommened ? If it was the correct product should I have used something over it ? If so what ? Or did I just apply it incorrectly ?

Thanks in Advance for you assistance I'm sure I'll be posting more as time goes on

    Hi Dan,

M40 is a water based product and when used on that kind of surface while it will make it look really good, it's not going to hold up as well when used on the exterior and exposed to water as a solvent based product. Another problem is the material you're working with is not very absorbent to start with so dressings more or less are a topical fix.

In our Professional Detailer line we offer All Season Dressing which will hold up better to inclimate weather, let me do some checking to see what would be a good choice from our other lines.

I am anxious to see some input on this issue. I applied #38 to tailgate handle of my truck and it too has white streaks. The handle is black plastic.

I had the problem with #40, but switching to #38 helped eliminate it. have you tryed nxt cockpit shine? I found this to work good as well, but it will not hold up to any rain at all, but I found that when it did fade it didn't turn "white" like the #40 did. I pretty much do a redo on the trim when I wash any more just because or that.

          Hey,

I use Meg's All Season Dressing for all exterior plastic and rubber. You need to apply it fairly heavy with a foam applicator and allow it to sit on the plastic/rubber ~3 minutes. Then come back and thoroughly wipe the plastic/rubber with a dedicated MF towel. This will even out the finish as well as remove excess product. It is a little messy to work with, but the results are beyond excellent!!!

hey Tim...easy question so you won't need your cape.
how does that hold up to washing or rain? I found some things better than others, but still pretty much anything needed to be reapplied after a wash. can you skip applacations between washes?

A couple of things to point out, when it comes to exterior trim such as anything made out of plastic, rubber and vinyl, all dressings are temporary, nothing lasts forever and in order to always have your trim and other components looking new and like they were recently cleaned and dressed will mean periodically re-applying the dressing of your choice.

Our best product for exterior trim in the Consumer Line is the Gold Class Trim Detailer

In our Professional Line it would be the Tire & Trim Dressing Gel

After applying any type of dressing to the surface, allow it to penetrate for a few minutes, perhaps conduct some other task in your detailing session and then like Tim mentioned, come back and wipe off any excess dressing. Excess dressing sitting on the surface of any trim is going to wash off and potentially streak white when exposed to a lot of water for example when it rains or you wash the car.

                Thanks !!

Thanks everyone for the replies, it looks like I'll be including #38 on my next order. I also wanted to mention that being new to these forums I find it amazing at how helpful everyone is here.

                Thanks Again

Ding, ding, ding........Thanks Tim and Mike. I think I found my problem. I applied #38 and just left it. I did not come back and wipe the excess. I knew I was supposed to but I guess I forgot. Now that I experienced the streaking, you can bet I will not forget the next time.

                    Hey 2000,

I have had excellent results from the ASD!!! Even after dirt roads, rain, etc...the black rubber and vinyl still looks great!! I am really amazed at how well the ASD holds up!
