  • Blackened muffler/exhaust

The parents just got a new Avalon, and while using the Nxt metal polish on my exhaust (subaru legacy) and theirs, I noticed the muffler and part of tail pipe are blackened, not just plain aluminum.

I am not sure what the black coat is, but I dont think it is paint or a powder coat, etc. Maybe something anodized?

I didnt think I should use the Metal Polish on it, but not sure what might protect it, keep them looking nice and black. Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

That all depends on whats on it. I dont think the polish would be a good idea on a possibly painted surface. It may just be a black colored metal. Most mufflers are usually powdercoated though.

Hmm..maybe it is powder coated then... I guess there arent many products for taking care of that.

not really, you pretty much just have to wipe it down. i paint mine black with rustoleum on the tip so that it stays in one peice over the years.

          Re: Blackened muffler/exhaust

It may have had exhaust work done. (I know you said new, but we have had brand new cars in for repairs on exhaust durring shipping) At the shop I work at we paint all the welds and pipes all the way to the cat with high heat radiator paint.

          Just a possible explanation.
