  • 3M trim adhesive tape and NXT

    Hello

I have a 2004 Ford Ranger...Today I took off the bedrail protector caps I put on last summer. they are just caps that fit on top of the bedrails to keep from getting scratched when putting cargo in the bed...

Anyways..they were dirty underneath with dirt and I assume salt in the winter.. also as they do not fit exactly flush to the body... I cleaned with a citrus solvent to remove leftover adhesive from original tape used to hold them on..then cleaned with alcohol..

Now my question is can I use NXT under them as a protectent or will I have a bonding issue with the new tape not sticking if there is a sealant on the paint.

The tape is a 3m high bonding tape made for automotive use such as trim and mouldings ...1 1/2 inches wide thickness is about as thick as a nickel.

    Thank You

I think you will have bonding issue with the tape if you use NXT first. The tape needs a clean suirface to bond to. If you putting the protectors back on the truck why would you want use NXT under them?

The reason I want a sealant under them is because when I removed them this week they had dust and dirt under them...

now what I am afraid of.. it could be a salt trap in the winter ..so a sealant may help hold off any paint damage till next summer.

      Thank you replying

That tape is the stickiest tape i have ever used.

Will it be used in a way so that the bed rails or whatever will be "pinning" it down?

If so, i would use it right over the wax.

          Yes Jeff

The tape will be applied to the underside of the bedrail caps..then the caps will be put on the bed rail then apply pressure on the caps to ensure good contact and adhesion...

and yes..the stuff is strong....bet you could hang a 20" tv on the cieling with this stuff..it is an acrylic adhesive..LOL

          Thanks
