  • Clear coat failing?

Hey guys I have a '96 Impala SS that has two spots on the roof that look to be clear coat bubbling up and about to pop and fail. I am looking to hopefully polish it out and bring it back to less critical levels.

Does anybody have any tips or thoughts on this? I think it should still be possible since it is not peeling yet. I will be clay barring the entire car this weekend to remove all contaminants before I attempt a paint correction for the whole car. The roof is most likely the worst though and will need the most attention.

Hey unfortunately this looks to be past the point of repair by means of detailing/paint correction. You could possibly make it worse by abrading with either a polish, compound or finishing paper.

Thanks Nick. That is not what I hoped to hear but that is what I figured I would hear.

*Sigh* very unfortunate but oh well.

It is best to leave failed clear coat areas untouched as it will only get worse quicker. The fix is a repaint.

Gotcha, I will probably take it to a paint and body shop and see what they can do for me.

I planned on detailing the car this weekend since it needs it bad. Will the wash mitt be okay to run over the failing clear? I am going to avoid clay barring and waxing those areas if that is a better move.
