  • nxt liquid, 2nd coat smears???

okay ive just come inside from the 2nd coat of nxt wax, but the 2nd coat didnt go so well

    heres what i did-

    washed and clayed whole car

1st coat of nxt put on thin with a soft cloth( i hate the feel of the aplicator ) i let it set up 20 mins and took it off with a MF cloth...it came off VERY easy,no smears or streaks at all

so after say 12 hrs or so i applied the 2nd coat, i put it on as thin as i could and let it stand 20mins, as soon a i tried to remove the wax i noticed it was harder to take off..so i figured it wasnt set up enough...i tried again later and it was still hard to remove

once i got it off, i still noticed streaks and smears which no amount of rubbing with the MF would remove...the smears came off when i huffed/breathed on the area and wiped with the MF

i cant see what i did wrong, any suggestions please

Ive not had a problem removing NXT, but whenever any product(cleaners, polishes, waxes, ect) is difficult for me to remove, i spray some QD on it. I never press hard onto my paint.

What was the ambient temp during this time period. It sounds like the first coat did not cure yet. If I can't get 24 hrs. between coats in damp/cool weather, I will wait until next weekend. Of course that strategy doesn't help if you want to finish in one weekend.

It's 85 degrees here today, so it probably takes only a few hours for the wax to cure. But it's almost too hot to do any kind of detailing today.

I have noticed the same thing happen to me, and had actually posted earlier about it as well. Perhaps in between the time of the first and second coat some particles bonded to your car (dust, tree sap, overspray, etc, etc), if parked outside. I still have trouble putting on wax, polish, etc... The only way I've been able to get around this is basically claying the entire car till my arm falls off... then cleaning it with Scratch X and then apply NXT and moving forward.

Instead of letting the wax sit for a certain amount of time, use the swipe test to determine if it's ready to remove.

How to tell when a Meguiar's wax is ready to remove - The Swipe Test

This is the most accurate indicator of when a wax is ready to remove. Once the wax swipes clear, remove it.

Anytime you have any problems at all removing product because of smears, or difficulty, remember, Like removes like.

Re-apply NXT Tech wax to a small section, say one quarter of the hood. Allow to dry till it swipes clear, then gently wipe the excess off. Now inspect that area as compared to the rest of the hood. If you do everything correctly, that area should be clear and streak free, if so, the repeat to the entire car or any affected area.

Don't work in direct sun as this will make any product more difficult to work with and get streak free results.

                Best of luck...

                  Hi Steve

I have had this happen to me a few times. Is your car Black by any chance? It seems to happen less if i apply polish first and then the NXT and it only really shows on the horizontal surfaces like bonnet.

Today I polished and then applied 1 coat of NXT and removed after about 15 mins (after swip test). There were still slight smears on the bonnet, but with slightly more pressure they disappeared. I tend to only do 1 panel at a time and check them regularly to ensure that i take the product off at just the right time (e.g today i left the NXT to cure on the bonnet while i was applying polish to the wings - then buffed the bonnet and applied NXT to the wings while i did the doors etc).

                  Best of luck.

                  Rob
