Piano Black Jamo Speakers

Hi everyone,

I am doing quite well with car detailing but now I need your advise for detailing my home theater speakers system. I have Jamo speakers "Concert Series" in Piano Black.

I noticed my subwoofer has some fine swirls and I am attaching some photos for reference.

Currently have UC, UP, UW, ColorX and yellow foam pads. Which one should I use that will help without being aggressive, and any techniques to follow?

I would contact the manufacturer to see if they have any recommendations; don't want to make matters worse.

Hi iMak, we would agree with the above response, we would start by contacting the manufacturer and getting more details. I would recommend asking for more information on the finish itself, any proper care recommendations for the finish, as well as if they approve the use of mild abrasive cleaners for swirl removal.

With that said, our M3416 Final Inspection, M09 Swirl Remover 2.0, and M07 Show Car Glaze have been used on hi gloss black painted instruments with success. The situation you have with your speakers appears to be similar to an instrument, a hi gloss paint on a wood substrate. If you were to try to use our automotive products to address the swirls & improve the gloss, these are the products which have been used in the past. They may work great but we suggest talking with the manufacturer first & doing a test spot. I would suggest applying with a soft foam applicator pad like our W0004 Soft Foam Applicator pads and removing with a quality microfiber towel like our X2020 Supreme Shine Microfiber Towel.

I have Jamo C109, C103, C93, C10 CEN & J112 SUB and when I was doing the routine cleaning I found some swirls on the subwoofer and the towers. I contacted Meguires for some advise on which products to use without damaging the paint, and they advised my to contact the manufacture.

I would like to ask for more information on the finish itself, any proper care recommendations for the finish, as well as if you approve the use of mild abrasive cleaners for swirl removal.

We usually recommend using an ammonia based cleaner such as windex. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Thank you for your reply. But I think windex is good for general cleaning and in my case I use optics cleaner which is doing quite good. But for swirl removal I don't think it's going to work. What is the paint finish, is it a hi gloss black painted wood with a clear coat? More info on the paint finish will be helpful.

We used a typical hi gloss paint with clear coat. If you're having swirls on your finish, you may want to try using a wax solution like you would use to polish a cars finish. That would help get the swirls out.

I think you are going to be OK but it is really going to just be a matter of doing a test spot to see how it works. Try to apply in an inconspicuous area at first. It is good to know they use a "typical high gloss paint with clear coat." If that is the case then you should be fine.

I recommend starting with ColorX or UP (ColorX would be the first I'd try) on the yellow foam pads (assuming you mean hand applicator pads) and work it in well. These both have light cut. As always, try to maintain even pad pressure if you're working by hand. Don't press harder with your fingertips. Work the product in well, then lighten pressure for the last several passes. Wipe it off and see how it looks. I recommend doing a test spot first to dial in the correct process.

A couple things to keep in mind.

Loudspeaker finishes are meant to sit in your living room and look pretty. They aren't meant to take the same sort of exposure and abuse automotive finishes. They tend to be far less durable. So Lydia's advice to start with very mild products and processes is spot on.

The edges on loudspeakers are waaaaaayyy sharper than the edges on auto bodies. It is much, much easier to burn through the finish on the edge of a speaker. Avoid polishing the edges. Mask them if you want to get close.

Polishing products are mostly water based. Speaker cabinets are usually made of materials like MDF, which doesn't like getting wet. Don't get all heavy and splashy with the polishes. Keep them to the finished surfaces and avoid unfinished areas like the openings for drivers and wiring terminals. Avoid getting polishes on the drivers (especially the tweeters) altogether.

All turned out good. Excellent restoration. I applied UP with hand using the yellow foam and finished it with a coat of UW. No signs of swirls, all gone.
