  • Repeated Apps of Finer Compounds

Having done my car with #80 and the G100 and not gotten all of the marks out of the paint, do I need to go to a more aggressive compound or will repeated applications of #80 eventually get the job done?

Time is not an issue, but safety is - "use the least aggressive product" is a fine motto

it really depends on the severity of the swirls. How many applications of #80 have you used? How long do you buff it before you wipe it off? What speed are you using on the G100? I have gotten some great results with #80 before, but if you dont work it long enough until it breaks down then the results will be fair to minimal.

      How long is long enough?

I know it breaks down, and as I'm new at this I guess I need some guidelines.

Let's say you are working a 2'x2' section of the hood. I worked it until it started to dry, which was less than 2 minutes I'm sure. Do I need more product so it doesn't dry? Should I keep working it for 4 minutes or will it have all broken down by then and I need fresh product to get the abrasive level up? It seems to me a repeated use of a milder compound to reach your goal is the smart move.

      I use speed 4

I suggest that you use #83 to get the swirls out. Then maintain your finish with #80. #83 is not all that aggressive.
