  • Should i use a microfiber or terry bonnet on my buffer?

Im wondering which one will cut better since i have deep scratches and scuffs? Im using a 6" buffer 3600 Cycles per minute 120v with meguairs rubbing compound but wondering which bonnet would be best to cut threw the scratches and scuffs faster?

Sounds from your description that you're using one of those "palm polishers" with a permanent pad and replaceable bonnets. If so, you're going to have some work trying to accomplish serious correction. A terry bonnet will cut more, so try that first. Clean your bonnet often and change it if it becomes too saturated with product and polishing residue. Inevitably, it will leave marring, so follow up with a milder product, such as Ultimate Compound, Ultimate Polish, or both in that order with the microfiber bonnet to clear up the marring. If you're going to get serious about polishing and correction, start saving your money for a righteous polisher and pads.

You mentioned marring is this caused from using rubbing compound or from using a terry bonnet?

Actually, both. Generally, terry cloth is a more aggressive applicator than microfiber, which is why I recommend it for the first step, since you stated you had deep scratches and scuffs and were trying to correct with a polisher that's marginal at best. Even with a pro-grade polisher, a less aggressive pad/product combination is often used as the second step to. I've done quite a bit of work with Ultimate Compound, which finishes very well, but there's always gloss enhancement to be had by following up with a polish such as Ultimate Polish or M205 and a softer pad.

Is a wool bonnet more aggressive then terry? My buffer came with wool but im worried about using them.

Generally, a wool pad is more aggressive than terry. Please note that if your scratches are deep enough to catch a fingernail, they're too deep to polish out completely without going through the top clearcoat of your paint. In that case, the best you can hope for is to minimize the damage. Any possibility of posting a picture?

I tried the wool bonnet it came with and it didnt seem to do much so i switch to the terry bonnet and i immediately noticed a difference in cutting. The terry did a better job removing scratches and scuffs.
