  • Removing paint from mouldings

So I finally decided to inspect my car after (since it came out from the Body Shop last week)...

As I had mentioned previously the bumper was going to be repainted for free and to my surprise the mouldings (Called Impact Strips I believe) have some paint on them!.

    1. I have no clue why they didn't remove the strips prior to painting
    2. If they weren't going to remove, at least mask properly!

I guess you get what you pay for, seeing that painting of the bumper was done for free.

So anyway, does anyone have any idea of how I might be able to remove this paint with out causing any harm to the actual bumper? I can take off the mouldings and then remove the paint and put them back on, that's not a problem. But i'm not sure what product to use.

If anyone has a 3-Series BMW 2001+ you'll know what part on the rear bumper I'm talking about. But non the less, it's the same plastic material that's on most cars anyway.

    Please help

Take it back to the body shop, show them the overspray, then ask them to remove it.

    How's that?

      Mike,

In regards to taking it back to the bodyshop, he says he "will try"... since the bumper was a freebie job, and I know the person, I'm finding it hard to push him.

My only alternatives are to buy new parts which come to about $130 Canadian for the entire bumper, or find a product that will remove the paint.

Are you aware of any Meg's product or any product in general that will remove this?... or perhaps a discounted online parts retailer?

      Thanks for your time.

Are these Impact Strips smooth? Or do they have a pebble textured surface?

Without seeing it first hand it's hard to think of a product we have for this, it can also be complicated because anything strong enough to dissolve and remove the overspray will typically be strong enough to dissolve the Impact Strips, or at least disfigure them.

Of the top of my head I would try Goo Gone

At least it will be safe. Try working it with a nylon brush after letting it sit and penetrate the paint. Too bad they didn't simply tape this off to start with, taping off with masking tape is fast and easy, removing overspray can be hard and time consuming.

I have a product called "Goof Off!"... it claims to remove paint stains from carpet... should I give that a try?... and the Impact Strips have a pebbled textured surface.

Goof Off, and Goo Gone are the same kind of products, I would test this product in a small area and see if it works, the sooner the better.

By the way, pebble textured black plastic is about as hard as they come when it comes to removing some off of it without changing the appearance of it.

            Best wishes...
