I think it is good to remember what Mike puts in his posts regarding evaluating your paint.

This is a time saving and clear coat saving skill to develop.

As JeffM said, learning the Squat test, and the sandwich bag test, and such are good things to learn. I would think once a month would sound good, though doing the surface tests after each wash will tell you when it is time to wax. You will probably see a pattern, like every 3 or 4 or 5 weeks, etc it will be time. Perhaps a spray booster wax would also be of interest to you, to use either inbetween waxings, or to slightly extend your wax durability.

It works great on red.

The Deep Crystal System works on all colors, but it will enhance darker paint.
