As JeffM said, learning the Squat test, and the sandwich bag test, and such are good things to learn. I would think once a month would sound good, though doing the surface tests after each wash will tell you when it is time to wax. You will probably see a pattern, like every 3 or 4 or 5 weeks, etc it will be time. Perhaps a spray booster wax would also be of interest to you, to use either inbetween waxings, or to slightly extend your wax durability.
