  • Wax & Paint Protect removal

    Hi all,

First post here and new to detailing... I bought a new car mid March ( KIA Sportgage). I use Gold Class for washing the car.

Mid-April I waxed the car with Deep Crystal Carnauba wax ( I clayed the car prior to waxing but there were almost no contamination on the paint)

Then two weeks ago I applied Paint Protect. I read in various forums that it's not necessary to use both and if you do, apply Paint Protect first and Wax afterwards. I did it the other way around . So the paint is well protected now.

My plan, come September, is to prep the car for winter daily driving. Should I remove the Paint Protect & wax, clay the car and re-protect? If yes which Meguiar's product should I use for wax/paint protect removal?

Should I use Paint Protect only for winter driving? Would Paint Protect last the 6-8 winter months of wet weather here in Ireland?

Is it a good idea to wax the car once a month in the spring / summer and then use Paint Protect in the winter?

    Thanks for your comments

Re: Wax & Paint Protect removal

You are correct both products are not needed. But for future reference a sealant goes first before it is topped with a carnauba wax. But not a cleaner wax because that will remove anything that was previously applied.

You will be fine. Paint Protect will just not last as long as it is intended to. The protection of both products will degrade over time. It is possible that by the time you get to do it again both products will be gone. I would recommend a wash and clay to start off. I would then use a polish such as ultimate polish or M205. It will clean the paint and remove anything that was previously applied. A polish will impart gloss to the paint as well. Then you can follow up with whichever protection you want.

If you want something that lasts longer then PP365 would be the product to go with. I can't comment on whether or not it will last that long in Ireland. As we all know a wax or sealant's durability is based on the surrounding environment and the exposure it sees to the elements. So it is quite possible it will suit your needs. But you can try it out and see if it does. You could use a spray wax like ultimate quik wax or D156 (bulk version of UQW) to boost PP365 and maintain it. You could essentially use PP365 all year round as your form of protection.

It is completely up to you on which form of protection you want to use. If you like the look of a carnauba then use that. If you want something that last longer then use a synthetic product like the PP365 you have.

Thank you for the detailed information!

After clay and polish would you apply PP365 or Deep Crystal Carnauba wax straight away or wait for the Polish to cure? As I have both products , I will use the PP365 in the winter and Wax for spring / summer. I do like the look of the Wax..

One final question; can I use PP365 on factory alloy wheels for protection? If yes would PP365 need to be re-applied each time I use Hot Rims All wheel & tire cleaner?

A polish does not need to cure. It should not be allowed to dry on the surface. Apply, work into the paint and wipe off. You can follow with a any protection right after.

Both products can be used on wheels. But you should not need anything else other than soap and water to clean your wheels once they are sealed. You can reseal them once it looks like it is time to do it once again. Ultimate quik wax is another good way to seal wheels. It can be used after ever wash and it is quick to do.

Thanks again. I will use PP to seal the wheels and clean them with soap and water ( probably dilute one 1 cap full of Gold Class in a sprayer with water). It will save me using the Hot Rims all the time. Unless there is a lot of brake dust on the wheels.

Re: Wax & Paint Protect removal

We wanted to chime in and mention the use of a polish is an optional step. Both the use of a clay bar or a cleaner/polish like Ultimate Polish, will work to remove any existing wax protection which is left on the surface.

We would agree that Ultimate Quik Wax is a great way to boost and extend the life of your original coating.
