  • Rubber Splats!

I had the awesome experience of being able to put my Mustang on the track this past Saturday! While I was on the track, I picked up a couple of rubber splats on the windshield. Logic leads me to believe that the bumper, hood, front fenders, and roof probably also have rubber splats from hot disintegrating tires all over. My car is black though, so they aren't easily seen.

My questions is; what is a good way of washing the car to deal with these? Will they wash off semi easily with a two bucket wash since the car was recently waxed? Will I have to go deeper and clay the car? I'm hoping I wont have to clay the car, but if I do, how will the clay handle the rubber?

    Thanks guys!

I know that an old drag racer's trick to getting the rubber off the quarter panel behind the rear tires was to coat the area with Meguiar's Spray wax (the OLD stuff) before the event. The rubber would still stick, but would come off much easier. With that in mind, I would go over the whole car with Ult Quik Wax before an event. It would only take 15-20 minutes tops.

Sounds like a good idea! I was chuckling about a car on the track with the front end all taped up. I see why he did it! I was really amazed at how many bug splats my car got in just a 20 minute track session!

blue painter's tape is the best on the track. The white scotch tape leaves tape residue which is a pain to clean. For the caked on rubber, I would take a pressure washer to the areas that have the caked on residue (12-15 degree fan). You could either use clay bar or WD-40 to help pull the rubber off if the pressure washer doesn't work on its own. The wax with your favorite wax.

I sometimes go with a QTR TNZ (Quarter Tens) to Irwindale or Auto Club Dragway.
We have learned not to sit in the rims with slicks as we change tires. The soft rubber that is generated in the burnouts transfers to your trousers. It sticks there fairly well, yet given the slightest opportunity, it will transfer to a cloth interior like iron transferring to a magnet.

Another free tip: When filming the burnouts, do not say "WOW". You will get rubber marbles stuck in your throat.
