  • something in between 105 and 205?

    Hi guys..

First some background info to explain why I detail the way I do.

I have a severe auto immune disease that causes me some nasty arthritis in my spine. Years ago I could spend a whole weekend detailing with a rotary polisher and all the cutting pads and compounds. Then I'd move onto the da and go through the polishing stage with lighter pads.

Thing is my back literally seizes up when detailing now days, especially fighting a rotary in the hard to reach areas. The da isn't the same beast to manage for me so I stick with it and leave the rotary. I also have to do my car one panel every time I wash the car. TBH it's all I can manage and this is also why I switched from 83 84 85 to 105 and 205. I find them loads faster and do a great job, probably better than the old school polishes, considering I rarely use a rotary anymore.

So I've been round my new car week by week with the 105 205 combo and am happy with the result. I did suffer a little hologram issue but resolved it with a change in technique.

But now I've moved around the car over the weeks and got back to the begining, I can see a few new imperfections that have cropped up from every day life.

Thing is I don't think it's bad enough to warrant using the 105 if I'm honest. But I don't think the 205 is strong enough!

I need an in between. But I'd really hate to switch back to the old school 83 because it takes longer to break down

    Suggestions?

Would maybe using a cutting pad with the 205, followed by a polishing pad with the 205 actually make a difference?

I can't edit the above....I actually mean cutting 7207 pad followed by a finishing 9207 pad...Both with the 205 polish

Actually moving to a slightly more aggressive pad is a viable option if you're just needing "a bit more cut." Or if you're up to it, try working the 205 a bit longer. One of these options should get you where you want to be.

If you follow the proper washing and drying techniques, you only need to compound your car once. Maybe the occasional spot correction. Try a test spot with M205 and a polishing pad using a DA and go from there. If you need to get more aggressive you can either change the pad to a cutting pad and continue to use M205. If M205 is not working to your satisfaction then you could then move to M105. You could even use M205 with a polishing pad if the cutting pad is too aggressive.

The test spot will tell you what the paint likes.

Thanks guys. It's given me a few ideas to think about and try some test spots as mentioned.

I think I'll try the 105 with a finishing pad in one area and the 205 with a cutting pad in another area and see which works best.

As said it doesn't need a full cut because I always wash and dry correctly ... but I have a pretty wide car (bmw x6) and it's mainly marks from bushes etc when driving narrow roads.. sometimes scuffs from careless people in car parks
