  • These scratches are driving me crazy!

I have a rotary buffer and meguiars ultimate compound and I absolutely cannot get rid of these scratches, they have no physical feel to them, so I know they are removable.. but how. Ill add before and after pictures. I just purchased this car and the paint was really neglected. I tried multiple speeds all the way up to 2100 rpm.

If anything it made it seem more noticable?

I use a random orbital buffer for pretty much all of my work, however mine is useless for taking out scratches. I am talking about scratches one cannot even feel with a fingernail drawn across. Forget it completely if your fingernail can detect the scratch. The buffer is great for swirls, but not for scratches; it just doesn't have the power. In those rate occasions I do get something the buffer cannot deal with, I take out my little Meguiar's DA system or whatever it is called. The little attachment that goes on an electric drill. That and some Ultimate Compound works great. You might consider buying one. Much less expensive than a full sized DA polisher, and great for spot correction.

Now that I see pictures, it looks like the paint is cracking. Scratches and scrapes normally go in one direction. Looks like a paint flaw to me.

Looks like clear coat fracturing. The only fix for that is a repaint.

Sand blasting would dull the paint or at the very least, the sand, moving in one direction, would scratch in one direction and not result is what appears to be cracks going in different directions. It is a paint flaw or as The Guz says, fracturing of the clearcoat. Kind of like when you step on thin ice, the cracks go in all directions. I agree with The Guz... only a repaint is going to fix that.

Re: These scratches are driving me crazy!

These are sometimes called "crow's feet" and, as The Guz points out, it's essentially the clear coat cracking and unfortunately, it is not fixable with any buffer or compound. This situation is most commonly found on the hood of the vehicle and is often associated with engine heat and time breaking down the structure of the clear coat. We had someone bring in a Ford Focus several years ago with the same issue, but if you really looked at the entire hood you saw what appeared to be a giant "X" of undamaged paint on the hood. Opening the hood revealed a large "X" shaped cross brace on the underside that perfectly coincided with the clear "X" on the paint. That can only mean one thing: the extra bracing provided enough heat insulation that it saved the paint in that pattern. The rest of it was shot.

Hey, Thanks a lot for sharing this. I have inlaws that have a Grand Caravan and I noticed it had this same problem. I could not compound it out and thought it was permanent from sun damage. At least now I know there is nothing I can do about it.
