  • Need advice on foam pads and products on a new car

Hi everyone, I'm from Mexico and as you may notice I'm new in detailing, just been using products like Turtle wax, "waxing buffers" and so... But finally i think i'm ready to start with the real stuff! (just for recreational purposes); by now i've bought the next products and tools:

    - UC
    - Swirl X
    - UP
    - UW
    - Harbor freight DA
    - Orange, white and black LC CCS 6.5" foam pads
    - Lots of MF's
    - Clay Kit
    - Wash mitt w/ gold class shampoo
    - 2 buckets

That said, I already know how to wash, clay and the basics on the DA use, (seen a lot of videos and guides); just keep questioning on what pads and products to use, all will be used on a 2016 electric blue Nissan Sentra SR (in M

Re: Need advice on foam pads and products on a new car

Ok, it seems that my post didn't show complete, here is the rest, sorry:

... (in Mexico is 2016, in the US I think it's 2015); it's 3 months old, so practically new, almost mint, for the except of very fine micro swirls (DISO); also have read that almost all nissan paints are soft; so the intended use of the products is:

    1) proper wash
    2) clay
    3) swirl x / white or orange pad
    4) UP / black or white pad
    5) UW / hand or black pad

What's your opinion on the use of pads and products as I intend to? don't want to go agressive and use UC so I don't think is necessary; here are some pics of the car as it is right now, you can see some of the swirls in the close up pic; as you can see it seems to be ok at all but I want a very nice shine and make the paint look darker and glossier; thanks for your opinion and comments.

Looks like some of your post hasn't appeared....

Can you give some information on the condition of your paint and what you are hoping to achieve?

Ok, so the post is on now, the paint seems to be like "orange peel" in some parts of the car (have seen almost all new Nissan models with this "orange peel"), so I think it can be the cause of lack of clear reflections, but one things is clear to me: I won't go to the sand paper!, all will be done by DA and the products I have, don't think the need of some more agressive products or pads. So what is your opinion on the working process? BTW, I also have liquid Gold Class wax, so the process can be:

        1) proper wash
        2) clay
        3) swirl x / white or orange pad
        4) UP / black or white pad
        5) UW / hand or black pad
        6) Liquid GC / hand

Thoughts and opinions on the pads/products?

        Thank you all for reading.

          Welcome to MOL.

I am sure you aware that orange peel won't be removed by compounding and/or polishing.

          Here's my recommendation

Swirlx and UP are closely related products. I would use either one but not both.

          1. Wash
          2. Clay
          3. Test spot with UP on a polishing pad
          4. Depending on the test spot proceed with UP or move to UC and a cutting pad
          5. Wax or Sealant for protection
          6. Maintain (ultimate quik wax or some sort of spray wax)

In the future you may want to consider going with 5 inch or 5.5 inch pads.

Thanks The Guz, as you said, I'm aware that orange peel is only removable with wet sanding (read that maybe with some denim pads but with rotary), and that's not the way I'm gonna go, so I'd have to live with it; I'll try what you said, maybe the UP does it with a polishing pad, just one question in case that combo doesn't work, can it be also the UP with a cutting pad like the LC orange? or it doesn't make sense, the reason is that I'm a little afraid of going with UC with the orange pad, or can it also be the UC with the polishing pad (white)?

And yes, for the maintenance I have UQW and for the tires also Endurance gel, for interior also the Ultimate Detailer but forgot to tell,

            thanks

Sure you can do that. If UP doesn't give you enough correction on your test spot then you can move to UC on a polishing pad. If you still need more correction then I would move up to the cutting pad with UC.

                Welcome to MOL.
If I could recommend 1 small thing to you it would be to change from a 6" set up with that DA. It would work much better with a 5" backing plate [either Meguiars or Lake Country] pair it up with your choice of 5" pads [Megs thin foam pads are great. 5" Lake Country pads work good too]

That is if you're planning on maybe working on a few other cars in the near future. If not, then it may not be such a hurry, since your car looks pretty much nearly flawless from the pictures. It's all about maintaining it now.

As far as the factory orange peel? I'd learn to live with it.
