  • Wax over Meguiars Chronme Polish?

With winter coming really slowly, I finally took my wheels off and put my winters on. Winter IS coming. I cleaned up my chrome rims with Meguiar's Chrome Polish and wow, fantastic stuff. I dare say, they look better than new. So much fun to clean them on the bench, as opposed to on the car. Anyway, my question is, does the chrome polish provide protection, or is it just a cleaner/polish? Should I apply a layer of wax...UPW..my go to product, on my rims? I realize they are just being stored in my basement, and not needing a much or any protection, it will be one job I won't have to do in the spring. Thanks.
Oh, by the way, if you do store tires in you basement, so not store them near furnaces, sump pumps, etc. Electric motors produce ozone..not good for tires.

It is my understanding that most metal polishes do not leave any protection behind unless stated on the container. I personally would put a coat of wax even if they are just to be stored for the winter.

That product will leave a little protection behind. Nothing very durable. Up to you if you want to seal them with something else.

I hate brake dust and I try to avoid the use of strong wheel cleaners, so my wheels are always coated with the most durable wax I have. A soft brush and my normal wash solution, either soap or rinseless are all it takes to keep 'em nice.

@Blueline. Which chrome polish did you use? The Heavy Cut, Med. or Fine?

It sounds like Hot Rims Chrome Polish. I haven't used it in years and I thought it had a little something but I can't recall.

I know the heavy cut, medium cut and fine cut don't leave anything behind.

I'm always confused as to which metal polish is best for different applications. i.e. chrome wheels and real metal chrome bumpers. I should go back and read Mike Stoops' article on it.

Somewhere back Michael recommended Hot Wheels Aluminum Wheel cleaner for chrome clad rims. That is what I used. Great stuff. Anyway, I had some time, so after I cleaned up the wheels very nicely, I went ahead and put a coat of UPW on them. Can't hurt and looks terrific.
Thanks for all of the replies.

As a side note, I would chose something other than a Wax to seal them with. A sealant of some sort as a minimum.

These days I just use a coating on my wheels. Less maintenance and holds up better than anything else.

@DasBurninator. Once you've got them coated what do you use to clean them? Can you still use D143 or no?

@Blueline. What's chrome clad mean? Are my stock wheels chrome clad?

This is why I get confused when it comes to what to use on what..

Most of the time I don't need a wheel cleaner at all since they are coated. Just car wash soap works fine unless they are really dirty. At that point I reach for AP DWC. But you could use DUB wheel cleaner as well. D143 should be fine as well. Typical wheel cleaning rules apply.

The nice thing about coatings is most chemicals won't break them down like they would with a sealant or a wax. And the extra pop the coating gives is worth it too.

The wheels on this car I did are coated. I got a text the first time the owner washed the car after having the wheels coated and he was astounded at how easy they came clean.

I agree with Das. A coating is the way to go. D143 is fine but not needed. Maintaining is much easier with just soap and water.

Oh ok cool. So just as long as you don't go and spray wax it or something like that? Is that the rule?

You can spray wax if you desire. It's not going to cause the coating to fail or anything. You will hinder its properties with that of the topper just like anything else. But at the same time you will extend the life of the coating. A coating will degrade over time just not as fast as a wax or sealant. A soap like CarPro Reset can remove any waxes and get back to the base coating.

I've had my wheels coated since April and the coating is holding up just fine. I've never spray waxed them just to see how it holds up. A sealant would last me about 3 months.
