  • new here, I have been reading and i have questions

hey people, i'm the new guy i guess. i own a 88 Mustnag GT which was repainted by the previous owner, don't know exactly how old it is but its less than 5 years. I have primarily been involved with performance as opposed to looks, so i could type out exactly how to pull and swap a motor in a weekend but when it comes to paint i am pretty lost .

now i was talking to a buddy who details cars at the local ford dealer, he found me a killer deal on a polisher that he figures it will be just fine for me, its not a random orbit but i couldn't fork out the cash for one, it has various speed setting and goes 1000-3000 rpm, and he says he uses one of these almost every day. now just last weekend did the clay bar and it picked up virtualy nothing so i went over it again cause i figured i must have done somethig wrong but nope. (car is never winter driven and is kept in a garage when its not being played with) last year i used the deep crystle paint cleaner and then the deep crystle polish before i put it away for winter and topped it with gold class wax. now when i ripped it out for spring i bought some NXT tech wax and am very happy with the shine but in some lights i can see some minor swirls and its bugging me (hence why i bought this polisher ) now onto my questions. are these products gonna clean up the swirls or am i just wasting my time and should move onto something a little better? i am pretty much set on using the tech wax but i don't know what i should do before it and what kinda of cloths i should use on the polisher. i did some reading but i can't seem to figure out about what cloths for what products

sorry for the long post and newbie question but i am a gear head and am totally new to this

Looks like you bought a rotary buffer. They can be dangerous in the hands of an inexperienced user. Practice on the 89 Tempo first, or on a hood or other body panel you can get at a junkyard. For machine applied products, I recommend #83 for moderate swirls and #80 for lesser ones. I would try the #80 first. Start with the least aggressive product and go higher if you need to.

Here's what you need to start out with, but the M80 Speed Glaze and our W-8006 foam polishing pad with the small backing plate.

        Speed Glaze
Soft Buff ® Foam Polishing Pads
W-64 ..........5" dia. (12.7 cm) (For use with 6.5" pads)

Also, we offer a how to video on using the rotary buffer for under $10.00 or you can watch it here,

        Watch our how-to video here,

        How to remove paint defects

After machine cleaning and polishing with the rotary buffer you can go right to wax, a better option would be the below. I understand you don't have the dual action polisher, I just wanted to add this suggestion anyway. The dual action polisher will insure a completely swirl free finish in direct sun or bright lights.

        Electric Dual Action Polisher
        Speed Glaze
        Soft Buff® Foam Polishing Pads

At this step, use the above same products that you used with a rotary buffer in your second step process, only now substitute a different machine to apply them with. For this step, use a dual action polisher to re-polish each panel using the oscillating action of this type of machine to polish and remove any remaining swirls left by the rotary buffer to insure a completely swirl-free finish.
