  • #80 by hand,then 2x #16 with PC

Im thinking about rewaxing my truck, its been about 4 months,i was going to use #80,by hand to clean, and prep paint . the paint is in A1 shape so i feel like i do not need to use my G100 i mainly want the #80 to strip the old nxt wax off and to put the rich oils in the paint before i wax,i was then going to use the G100 for 2x coats of #16 can any one agree with me on the method i wish to use,it sounds go to me.

your method is fine. Its ok to do 80 by hand. I feel youll get a better result if you use 80 with your G100.

I would use the G100 with Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner if you feel that #80/G100 combo is too much.

DCPC is pretty good stuff anyway, but the G100 makes it work even better, without being too abrasive.

About the only thing I do by hand is #7, or #81.

If your paint is in A1 condition, then applying M80 by hand or with the dual action polisher will create a surface perfect for application of wax. The polishing action of the dual action polisher is pretty had to beat however.

Is there a risk of the #80 not breaking down sufficiently when being used by hand and causing marring as a result?

            That's a good question.

It's a 4 on the abrasive scale......The bottle says it can be used by hand, but I'd feel more comfortable with the DA doing the polishing.

I guess a side by side comparison would be the best way to tell.

I agree with both these opinions. Since the prep is 90%+ responsible for your end result, I think using the G100/PC would be the better choice if you're wanting to strip the paint clean and start over fresh. While the #80 is rated '4' on the scale, it seems to break down so fine that it goes from a moderate cleaner/scratch remover to an ultra fine polish that leaves you ready for topcoating.

The DCPC is a non-abrasive deep paint cleaner (no play on the name intended). It will also strip the surface down to clean paint and assuming your paint was free of swirling/scratching to begin with, it also will leave your paint ready to wax/seal.

If I were making the choice on my car as it sits right now, I would choose the DCPC + PC simply because in its current state, my car doesn't need anything aggressive and the DCPC would be more than sufficient to strip the finish clean so I could start over.

I use PC to apply #80 without problem and easy to break down. However, it seems the #80 is difficult to remove by MF compared to the waxes. Any suggestions?

you are not supposed to let the #80 dry to a haze. maybe thats why its difficult to remove. or maybe prep the pad by spraying some quick detail onto it. learn one teach one... is that how the saying goes?oh and one question, where is superior shines detailing shop? i don't have an extractor and i want to clean or have my carpet cleaner in my car. its a 1987 300e. its not bad and there is no need to clean the floor mats. i already did those myself and i am happy with the results.

I use a terry towel to remove #80 myself. It tends to get a little tacky after I break it down with the PC.

Maybe LnkPrkSoldier's suggestion would help some........I'll give it a try next time.

I have a few questions about #80 applied by hand. I've used #80 with a PC, but never tried it by hand because of several threads that indicated to me that #80 must be applied by machine to effectively break down the abrasives. This, I thought, meant that #80 might leave micromarring if used by hand.

                      1. Is #80 more or less aggressive than Scratch X when applied by hand?
                      2. Is #80 less aggressive applied by hand than when used with a PC?

                      Thanks!

Sorry it took so long to reply,my only concern with using M80 with the G100 every 4 months or so,was the fear of # 80 wearing down or off the clear coat, after several years of use,is this a concern or not.

If you keep your car for many years, then, yes, I would be concerned about it.

Sounds like you try to keep your car in good shape, and if thats the case, I would go for Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner, or #9, or #82.......There are other products that I could list here that are similar to these, and would not be too harsh to use 4 times a year.

I have an '85 model Toyota that I've kept for a good while, and the clear finally wore through on the top. Part of it was age of paint and being exposed to the elements, but some of it was due in part to my ignorance of not using the least aggressive product at the time (I used #2 a lot back then).

There is no reason to worry as M80 is a fairy light cleaner/polish.

Next time you're using it, shake the bottle well and pour some out between your fingers and feel it, you'll notice it feels more like a hand lotion than anything else.
