    Black Paint - Best products and Methods - Info wanted

    Greetings everyone,

    I am new here, but I am not new to cars or to the industry. I worked in the autobody field for 10 years and a majority of that time was spent as a polisher/detail guy, rubbing out fresh paint as well as old finishes with an orbital polishing wheel.

    The problem is I retired from that in 1992! I am certain that much has changed since then.

    I recently purchased a black 1962 Oldsmobile that was restored in the mid 1980's. It was sprayed with acrylic enamel. From 10 feet away the car looks great, but as you get closer you see the normal fine surface scratches, which I am certain white compound will take care of.

    What I would like to know it this... what Meguiar's products and methods would you recommend to make this car retain a DEEP black color with amazing gloss?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated! Btw... I do not own a DA polisher... should I buy one?

    I'm sure anyone here would say that you should get a DA if you can afford it. It makes life so much easier and produces superior results.

    Do you have a pic of the condition of the paint? Being single stage, it may benefit from M7...

          They are allowed, but I think it's because you're new and they need approval.

          Anyway, I had a look at the pics from the link in your signature. Cool car!

          The paint doesn't look too bad at all. You could start off with UP (Ultimate Polish) and see what that does. It should improve things a lot, but may not remove all the swirls. Failing that, you could step up to something more aggressive like UC (Ultimate Compound), followed by UP to refine the finish.

          Then your favourite sealant or wax. I recommend UW (Ultimate Wax).

          But yeah, that's a lot of real estate to cover, so do yourself a favour and get a DA!

            I was thinking of using the "Ultimate" line... so you confirmed what I was thinking1 I would hit it with white compound first anyway...

            As far as DA goes, I would not be using it more than twice a year, what brand and model would you recommend?

                        I agree with this too. The Ultimate line is fantastic. It's made me a lot of money, and consistently delivers what I need out of it.

                        You can look into the entire Meguiar's line for your d/a and pads as well.

                              If you are looking for a DA that won't break the bank consider the harbor freight da. Pair it with the new thin foam Meguiar's pads and backing plate. SEMA is around toe corner so lots of things coming in terms of tools if you wish to wait.
