  • Clearcoat appears cloudy after hood partially sprayed 10 yrs. ago

I've noticed an area on my hood that is appearing cloudy after it was partially painted 9-10 yrs. ago.

I'm not certain if you can see it in the photo, but here's how it looks.

Let me also add that the paint is a tan metallic. It appears non-cloudy depending on the angle, but at the correct angles you can easily see the light cloudiness that is beginning to show. The clearcoat is not lifting and the paint feels perfectly smooth across the entire hood. It doesn't appear as though the entire hood was clearcoated as I can readily see a blend line...perhaps, this is the issue.

Can anything be done to remove this cloudiness, or would the hood have to be repainted?

Hard to tell, but it looks like the edges of the blending to me.

Have you tried anything on it yet? A compound / polish won't hurt and could certainly improve it.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Yes...I have used a clay bar & also have used a rubbing compound. Neither have put forth any improvement.

Looks like the paint under the clear coat is starting to fade. I have that same phenomenon on my car that has had the front fenders repainted. The clear coat is fine but it's the paint underneath it. There is no real fix other than a repaint if that is truly the case.

I have exactly the same problem on my 2008 Volkswagen - it's reflex silver, very similar to your car.

Having visited some body shops the general consensus is that the paint under the clear coat is the problem. Possibly caused when it was sprayed / dipped in the factory they reckon.

I'm not too bothered about mine though because it's only visible in certain light.
