  • Dark Lines in Paint

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

I've noticed in certain light, there appear to be dark lines in the paint on my car's roof. Only had the car a few weeks. They're quite tricky to spot depending on the light.

Because of how consistent they are (pretty much straight lines), to me they look like a paint fault caused when the car was sprayed in the factory. They're definitely under the clearcoat.

    What do you guys think?

    Here are the direct links to the photos;

I detailed the car last week by claying, Ultimate Compound then two coats of Ultimate Wax (liquid) all by hand.

I have no idea if the lines were there before or not unfortunately as I didn't pay too much attention until the detailing had been done.

Damien, This is my thinking; Strip the roof of all product with a painter prep product, then access the roof for lines again.
If there is paint lines, return to the dealer for repair.

Is possible the dealer repainted the roof before you purchased the car?

        Hmm... that's a tough one.

Have you tried anything on it so far?

          Thanks for the replies.

Sadly the car is now 8 years old and the paint warranty (7 years) has expired. The car has at one point had Auto Glym LifeShine treatment as there's a receipt with the documents which came with the car. I can only assume the dealer who did this didn't do it very well, as the paint is a bit blotchy in places. There's a small spot on the hood too that looks like a containment has been sealed in almost with the LifeShine.

It's a real shame about the lines because the paint is in fantastic condition everywhere else. The car has spent most of its life garaged and has stupidly low miles.

The only thing I've done to it is the detailing I mentioned before. Will a good treatment with UC and Ultimate Polish be enough to strip all protectants, including the remaining Auto Glym LifeShine?

            Sorry, I missed that part.

And yes, UC should remove any product left on the paint. Working by hand is the limiting factor though. If it's really bothering you, you should try it with a DA.

I have the same issue with my vehicle. It's on my hood and no where else.

What brand of car is it?
Did you search to see if anyone else has had the same problem with the make of your car?

There is always the early waterborne paint failure scenario.
