Almost that time again

I'm here in the north east and want to protect the time and investment I've made over this past summer to my vehicle. I have so far compounded, polished and touched up w/ Dr Colorchip. Now that I have waited the time specified by Dr Colorchip I want to finish up with Wax. I have Ultimate Liquid Wax on hand. I will wash, clay if needed then Wax.

1. Is Ultimate Liquid Wax appropriate for winter or is there a better product
2. After waxing would adding an additional coat of Meg's Ultimate Quik Wax add any additional protection
3. Any other tips or advice (besides move down south ) would be appreciated

My favorite winter combo is Ultimate Paste Wax / M16 Professional Paste Wax. M16 is currently hard to buy, I bring it from Europe.

1. Ultimate Wax is Meguiar's longest lasting wax, so it's a good choice if durability is needed.
2. Ultimate Quik Wax is a great booster product after every car wash, as car washes remove thin layer of wax.
3. Have you considered a paint coating ?

Lay down a coat of Ultimate Wax and then regularly treat the car with Ultimate Quik Wax every chance you get through the winter. Consider using a rinseless/waterless wash in your garage during the winter months to control wash damage. If you use D115 Rinse Free Express Wash & Wax or Ultimate Wash & Wax Anywhere (same basic product, just pro vs consumer packaging) then you'll be laying down some nice polymer protection every time you wash anyway.

Mike gave some good tips. UW maintained with UWQ is great. There is also paint protect which lasts longer than UW. Seeing as you have UW already, then use that. Possibly give it another coat before the weather turns.

If Gloss Coat only lasts 6-8 months then I would opt to go with a sealant seeing as the cost is not worth it for that durability. I have never used it but it is stated to lasts up to 2 years.

During NxT Institute I spoke with detailers, who install Gloss Coat, and 6-8 months is a guaranteed protection period, of course it depends on surrounding environment and vehicle usage.
There is no sealant which would guarantee that period of protection. Plus 10cc of Gloss Coat allows couple applications.

Last winter New York City saw temperatures in teens and single digits for many weeks. A permanent coating would allow uninterrupted protection without need(s) re-application.

That is interesting that they are seeing 6-8 months out of it. I would have thought it would last longer than that. I agree with you on surrounding environment playing a factor, no issue there. Yes it's more durable than a sealant. In the long run it's cheaper but a sealant can last about 3-6 months. It may not be as durable but the prep work is not as rigorous with a sealant. There are just two arguments on both sides. Both have their pros and cons.

I'm a fan of coatings myself. Meguiar's needs to hop on the bandwagon with one already.

what is about Paint Protect - 365 Day

it should provide 365 day protection - of course that would depend on weather environment. I haven't tried yet by my self but it's on my agenda; the thing is I'm not sure where it stands in the gloss arena .

On a light colored car there is no distinction between Paint Protect, M21 or UW. They all look the same. We all know that the gloss comes from the prep work. Paint protect will just lock your prep work longer.

Great advice as always, thanks guys !

One problem I had was I wasn't able to fully remove the wax. No doubt user error... probably used too much. It was also unseasonably cold and raining. Around 48 and very damp. I was able to remove most, but the last bit just kept smearing around. It wasn't all that noticeable but where the wax remained appeared a little darker (black car).

Anyway I tried some micro fiber bonnets I had just picked and the remaining wax came right off.
My question is... I'm concerned now that I may have removed too much of the wax by using these. Should I re-wax ?

I guess you meant you were not able to fully wipe off the remaining. Probably too thick layer of wax has been applied.

You can apply a second coat of wax after at least 24 hours. You will have guaranteed solid coverage.

I probably would.

Next time you get the streaking issue, just lightly spritz a MF towel with some plain water and re-buff. That should level everything out and eliminate the streaks.
