  • Advice: Neither compound nor touch-up has worked so far to remove small imperfections

I have quite a few chips/imperfections on my hood and roof. After going over the areas with a DA using LC Foam pads and both Megs UC and UP I was unable to remove them. I then went with the Dr Colorchip touch-up paint system, which after having spoken to the owners it was determined that they might not be deep enough to hold the paint.
So I seem to have imperfections that are too shallow to hold touch-up but too deep to be removed by compound. Since the touch-up didn't work I suppose I will have to try compounding again or just live with it as is. My first attempt was not very aggressive at all as I am a novice though it did a great job of removing swirls and such.

My question is should I attempt a more aggressive compounding and if so, how should I go about it ?

I'll just add, the car looks 1000X better since using the Megs UC and UP but I'd like to get it as close to perfect as I can. Also the Dr Colorchip is an excellent product in that the chips that were workable came out very good and the staff were very receptive and helpful to my concerns.

    Thanks....

The following two photos are macro setting with no flash.....

And just to show how different lighting visually affects the imperfections.... at times they are very visible and others not at all.

That is often referred to as clear coat fracturing. The only fix is a repaint.

Hi Guz. Yes I believe there is some clear coat failure. However I think there might also be some tiny chips/imperfections as well. Not sure though.
The larger ones in the photos are CCF I believe, but I'm not quite sure what the much smaller ones are ? I thought they might be tiny chips/imperfections. If so I was hoping to be able to remove them.

What is your opinion of the smaller ones ? Are they CCF as well ?

Hard for me to say what they really are. Can you feel the smaller ones? You would feel an uneven surface if it was a chip.

Yes, some I can. Barely though. Again the photos are macro shots, in actuality they are very small. It's hard to tell.
For whatever reason compounding and polishing didn't remove them. I'm wondering if a second more aggressive approach might yield better results. Though still being a novice that does concern me.

I've compounded, polished and finished off the paint touch-ups. And now with winter on it's way here in the north east I need to either run it through another C & P or just apply the wax and live with it.

An idea for those tiny chips...they may just have some 'polish or compound' embedded in the craters.

Take a Q-Tip dipped in alcohol and try one hole to see if that MAY remove the 'white'. That should give you an idea what your are up against. It isn't a fix just a 'makes it look better' thing.

              Thanks Bill !!

Prior to using the Touch-up paint I had to do an IPA wipe down. Actually I did several to be sure.
Though thats a good tip. I may have to do that after I polish or compound from now on to keep it free of products.
