  • Need help with my Harley - Swirls

Hi all. I have a situation that is unsettling for me, but probably not a big deal for the majority of you. I purchased a 2015 Harley back in June in the worst color to own, Vivid Black. When I got it home and had it parked in the driveway with the sun on it, I saw swirl marks. I spoke to the dealership briefly and they told me to bring it in. I decided not to because clearly their detailing guy caused the swirl marks so why would I bring it back to them. Fast forward a couple of months. I decided to try and remove the swirl marks myself. I purchased Harley's swirl remover so no one at Harley could contest that I used the wrong product. I went ahead and did part of the tank and I made it worse. I purchased new microfiber cloths to use on it. I am really upset because the tank looks like sh*t now (in sunlight anyway) and it's brand new. So that's the background.

I emailed Meguiars customer service and asked how to best approach this. The rep responded and told me to use the Ultimate Compound. The fact that they have 2 other product (SwirlX and ScratchX) that are less intrusive and he went right to that, concerns me. He said that since the paint is new that was the best choice. Here are my questions:

    1. Looking for opinions on what product to use to remove the swirls, the compound, SwirlX or ScratchX
    2. I will be doing this by hand. I plan on using foam applicators. Can someone try and describe the amount of pressure I should use and how long I should work it in
    3. Do I use a different area of the applicator when applying more product to a new spot (the applicators are not that big)
    4. When wiping off should I always use a clean area of the cloth?
    5. Should I use the deep crystal polish after one of the above products, then wax or just go right to wax?
    6. I have a really small spot that looks like the clear coat is knicked (probably from something kicking up) about the size of a BB, should I avoid getting any prep product on that area?

I really appreciate you taking the time to read this and also appreciate any opinions and guidance that is given

First I have to disagree that black it the worst color. It may be difficult to maintain, but you can't beat black. It is a labor of love, but absolutely gorgeous when done right.
    1. I would use Ultimate Compound and then Ultimate Polish. The UC may leave a slight haze, and the UP will polish it. Do not let either dry on the paint. Remove when still wet.
    2. It is difficult to express pressure over the net. You will have to start out lightly, have a look, if they are still there, do it again, more pressure, have a look, and so on, until you are happy.
    3. You don't need to use a different area of the pad when applying to a new spot. You should use a new applicator (or cleaned) when you go from the UC to UP. Your Harley has about as much paint as half my car door. You should be able to do the whole tank/etc. with a few drops of both UC and UP.
    4. A clean area of the cloth is always a good idea.
    5. After UC, sometimes a wax can be applied, but I have found that sometimes UC will haze ever so lightly, and I need to apply UP polish, and then a good wax. Ultimate Wax is an excellent choice.
    6. Not seeing the spot you are referring to, but guessing...I would just ignore it and consider it not there and UC, UP, and wax right over it.

Some might suggest you clay before UC/UP but I would not bother. Bikes are not shipped in open air that I am aware of, and not subject to rail/road dust. They are usually stored new in a showroom..at least in my area. Good luck.

        Agreed with the above.

I wouldn't hesitate to go straight for UC, especially since you're working by hand. Remember, you can adjust the agressiveness of UC by changing your technique / application media etc.

If you're still worried about UC being too agressive, try a test spot with one of the less agressive products first (UP, SwirlX, ScratchX) and see if that works. Chances are you'll end up going with UC anyway

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Hope it turned out great. I just used a PC7424 with UC and an orange pad, then UP with a white pad on my Black Honda VTX with severe scratches from a gas station paper towel (please don't hate on me). I overfilled it and had to get the gas off before it got all over my pants. Agree with Davey, by hand you have all the control and

This is as good of a plan as any. I have two vivid black Harleys...a 1995 Sportster 1200 and a 2002 Dyna SuperGlide. Both bought new. No matter how careful you are, you are going to have swirls show up even with the tenderest of care. Vivid black is a very soft paint. It's just the "nature of the beast".
