  • Progress So Far... Advice Needed On Touch-up

So far this is the progress I've been able to make in restoring my somewhat neglected car....

The photos are after Megs Compound and Polish (no wax yet) using a HF DA and 5'' Foam Pads on a Megs BP. Followed up with multiple applications of the Dr Colorchip touch-up system in that order. All in all considering the condition the paint was in and that I'm a first timer I have to say these products and the advice I received here are amazing.

Now I need some advice as to why the Dr Colorchip has not blended in well with the existing paint. When first applied it goes on a deep rich glossy Ebony Black and blends perfectly. However after it dries and the excess is removed via the supplied solution it appears a dull mattish grey. You can see it in the Second Photo against the red house reflection. In person it has toned down the stark white of the road rash however it does not blend well or look as good as other photos I've seen.

What can be done - if anything - to bring out more of a glossy blacker appearance so as to blend in better with the existing paint ???

    Thanks....

Notice the Dr Colorchip touch ups against the red house reflection in the photo below.
Judging by other photos and videos these should have blended in much better with the original paint....

    Great work so far!

Sorry I can't provide any suggestions regarding the Dr Colorchip, but I'm sure others will chime in...

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Nice progress. Is the color matched pretty well on Dr. Colorchip?

          Thank Guz !!

Actually the Dr CC was very disappointing. It did remove the stark white of the chips against the Ebony Black of the car. But the end result is a dullish grey which doesn't blend well with the deep black of the car.
You can see this in the second photo, where the chips are visible against the reflection of the house.

The end result is the Dr CC is duller, greyish with little to no shine, and does not blend with the deep black luster of the vehicles paint at all.

When first applied it goes on a glossy Ebony Black and blends well. However after it dries and the excess is removed via the supplied solution it appears a dull mattish grey.

My question is, are touch up paints usually duller ? Could it be user error ? How can I better match the paint ?

Have you tried contacting the Colorchip cust. service? They'd be 1st in line if I was in your shoes. Overall the car looks great though

I think what Guz was trying to ask was: did you get the Dr CC color matched to your vehicle, or did you just use a generic black?

                Thanks Eldorado !!

Yes actually that was the first thing I did. I've been corresponding with them for the past few days. So far they're saying after I wax, it should blend better.
As the Dr CC currently appears duller and greyish compared to the vehicles color.

I did though want to ask here as well, as I have a lot of respect for the opinions of the MOL community

Thanks Dave, boy did I miss that one.

Sorry Guz !! Yes they color-matched to the exact make model and year. It came out as Sonata Ebony Black.
Though I don't believe it is actual 'Hyundai factory paint'. It is some type of proprietary paint made to work with their system.

Yeah that is what I meant. It's not actual OEM paint. It's a decent match.

Hmm.. That sounds sort of like cheap answer from them IMO. I mean they call themselves the "Dr. Colorchip" right? Lol.

If we were to keep it simple and form a favorable argument, we could easily believe/say/and confirm in some cases, that wax does absolutely nothing to alter the paint because the Real results come from polishing. Now of course we could easily go the other way around.. But the point is you're not satisfied with the outcome based on them being the #1 place to look when it comes to this specific area of paint repair. I don't know how much it costs, but last time I checked "Doctors" are never cheap! I'd be "cough" gettin my "cough" money back if I were you. Lol.

.... I dunno, but that excuse by them is really low IMO.

I definitely agree Eldorado. I'm not all that impressed with their customer service. I did send photos for them to review.
Here's what they've said so far...

Once you are able to wax the repaired areas, this should bring back the Black Ebony color.

Anyway thanks for the tip on polishing. I was searching around trying to find some info on just that. I suppose I have to allow some time for the paint to cure. Then there after I'll try polish and wax to see if it helps the appearance.

I'm thinking that 1) some of the chips are very shallow and might not allow the paint to grab and 2) there is no clear coat to apply which might also affect how it looks.

There is a 'sanding pen' available that sands an area about the size of a pencil eraser. I'm wondering if I were to slightly sand over the shallow chips, would that give the paint enough to grab onto ? Or just make matters worse.

Also I have tiny 'clear coat failures' scattered around. They're whitish and can't be felt on the surface. (no chipping or indentation) if I used this sanding pen to slightly sand above them (as they're under the clearcoat) and then applied touch up paint would that effectively conceal the clear coat failure imperfections ?

                        Thanks again....

I just remembered seeing a cheaper version where someone used a hole puncher on fine sandpaper, and then attached them to the eraser end of a pencil with crazy glue. Using it to slightly sand a tiny area.
