  • Which wax would you use?

Hey guys, I'm set to do an exterior detail on this 5 month old Dodge Charger this weekend. I'm planning on doing a full wash and clay, then doing a 1 step polish/wax.

The paint is pretty much swirl free at this point. What would you use if you had to choose between Black Wax & White Wax? I'll be applying it with a DA and Megs foam polishing discs.
I also have D151 PRC, but I'm not really considering that for this car.

White wax would get my vote.

Should have included a poll in this thread

IF the car is swirl free and the paint should be clean after a clay... Why not use ULW or Paint 365 for the best protection. White Wax is good stuff but why polish(even though WW has more cleaner than polish) at any level IF the paint is already clean and defect free?

        Just curious

Re: Which wax would you use?

          I see what you mean.^
My idea is to use Black Wax in order to polish out to maximum gloss.. I figure the clay will do any cleaning that's needed, and I don't need any correction on the car.

As far as going straight to LSP after clay, I feel like the paint could benefit from a machine polish/wax rather than going straight to a sealant. Just to make sure it's getting the most out of it.. I'll be maintaining this car from here on out, so a more durable wax can come later.

How will you be polishing the paint? If its by DA, why not go with something like M205 to really get the most out of a "dedicated" polish, then follow up with ULW or PP?

            Just m opinion

I'm kind of in agreement with just polishing rather than using an AIO. Especially after you just said you want to polish. I guess if you are going to do a quick job then the AIO would be the way to go.

I will be polishing the paint with Black Wax...

We've already agreed to a price, and I'm getting paid to do a 1 step. Besides, it's not as if Black Wax' protection is so inferior to others.. If everything goes as planned this vehicle will be maintained by me in the future. You can bet it'll stay protected.

Yes, not being your s is the difference.

Can't do much more than paid for.

Ah see we had no idea that you already agreed on a price. This little detail was left out. Either one would be fine. Follow up with some D156 per Mike Stoops white wax thread even with black wax. It should last a few months. It's not like he is in a rainy climate. In reality any cleaner wax would be fine even your D151. You also have the option of M20.

To be honest there will be a miniscule difference in gloss between the two products on silver. I didn't notice much of a difference between using white wax or M205/UW or M205/M21.

Looking forward to your thread with photos.

Re: Which wax would you use?

You're sorta right about little difference in gloss.. Only reason I say sorta is because I too did a test of similar products and found interesting results. I actually took a bunch of pics, and was set to do a huge write up but was swarmed with sidejobs and never ended up dedicating the time to post about it.

But here's the cliff note version..
                      Black wax on the left.
                      M205 center.
                      D151 PRC on the right.

                      M205 won.
Black Wax came in a close 2nd. Very close.
PRC sort of got left in the dust..

However, both M205 & Black Wax got the pleasure of being used with the new Megs thin foam polishing discs. While PRC was used with a LC Flat Foam Pad/White.

Both BW & M205 corrected well. M205 left the paint 100%
But PRC on the LC pad still had a signifigant ways to go... There's only 2 ways to call it. But I couldn't help to think it had to be the difference in pads.

Here's the only surviving pic I have of my test from that day. I had a bunch of detailed close ups of all 3 in direct sun to compare, but I ended up deleting them because I never got around to doing a write up.

Moral of the story.. Don't settle for swirls.

If it's swirl free then I say black wax for the more polishing benefit. If it needed minor correction somewhere then I would do black wax.

I think I would vote for the white wax, claying will remove surface contaminates, and you should use a cleaner to get the stuff the clay couldn't. This way if you're going to be doing this car on a regular basis, you'll have a decent foundation to stand on since you've already clayed and cleaned the paint and from what I understand the protection from WW isn't too shabby.

Re: Which wax would you use?

Here's a few pictures of the process & results w/Black Wax.

This is the car as it showed up.

Paint's in good condition. No swirls or oxidation.

But there were some contaminants for the clay to remove.

Spread the Black Wax nice and thin. Just like any other wax, the more you use, the harder it is to take off.

I had plenty of Ultimate Wipes on hand for easy removal.

Here's a shot of the side of the car just after removing the coat of wax. [hood still has layer of hazed wax on it]

After photos. I used D4510 to make the honeycomb grill pop. Also used D115 as a final touch on the chrome.

Black Wax worked great. Smells good too. Customer was blown away. Lol. He said he'd never posted a picture of his car on Instagram, but he is Now!
