  • Need some advice Corvette C6 and technique

I recently purchased a 2005 C6 Yellow. I've been out of the detail game for a little bit so bare with me I need some help lol. The car doesn't have bad swirls but in some spots its worse then others. Is it me or is this paint extremely hard? I use a G10v2 with a yellow pad with ultimate compound speed about 5 with a good amount of pressure and I feel like it didn't do much. Maybe after 3 passes I could see a difference. Mind you It took me like almost 1 hour to do one panel I even tried to hit it with M105 and I didn't couldn't tell the difference. Maybe its me.

I've also wondered why after maybe 5-7 passes my pad looks dry? From then after I put [FONT=Calibri][SIZE=3][COLOR=#000000]More product on, after every single pass I have to spray water on the pad to get it lubricated so the compound will go on the paint if I don

M105 has a short working time. A wetting agent like you are using is a good way to extend the working time.

Vettes typically have hard clear. One recommendation would be the microfiber cutting discs with D300. My 02 Camaro SS has hard paint and I had a similar issue like you where M105 wasn't "cutting" it. I ended up getting D300 and the microfiber cutting discs and that was the ticket. If you need to get more aggressive than D300 then M105 would be fine to use with the microfiber cutting discs. I had the same issue with my dad's 02 Z28 and the microfiber cutting discs were the way to go.

Another option is the new thin foam pads. The cutting pad is really good.

I have the thin pads, and I know that at least with them, the yellow (polishing) pads is fairly mild - it can be used to apply an LSP, so if you were using one of the older, thick yellow pads, you were definitely starting off with the least aggressive, a test spot should have shown that a more aggressive pad was needed.

Bases on my limited experience with black and red Corvettes, yes I would consider the clear coat to be hard. Watching another profession detailer work, he mixed a M105 and D300 on a microfiber pad. The D300 seems to keep the dusting down from the M105. I use a Flex 3401 forced rotation DA and with a fair amount of down pressure, slow arm speed and 5 on the speed dial you can remove most defects. So not too unusual to spend a lot of time working a Corvette

Just be careful of those non-metal parts. They do not dissipate the heat of buffing and can be easily damaged. Might also suggest working with a Brinkmann light to track down swirls as you work. I sometimes use an alcohol wiped down to insure I've found every defect between a series of passes.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Well I started off with UC and noticed nothing then 105. The foam pad I have is the meguiars 2.0 and the red pad I have is useless in my opinion it's hard and don't work to me, it's brand new to smh.. I've never used microfiber discs or this D300. I wish some of you guys lived near me so I can just drive up and get taught if I. Doing something wrong.

I'll post the info here instead of by PM. It's a good reference for using the microfiber system.

Follow this thread on using the microfiber cutting discs and you will be just fine.

I would also recommend investing in smaller pads meaning 5". The new thin foam discs are nice and seem to work well on hard paint. I would recommend both pads.

When I use the microfiber cutting discs, I follow up with a foam polishing pad and M205 to refine the finish.
