  • Kia Pinstripes and Polishing

For Father's Day I would like to detail the exterior of my father's Brown Kia. It is approximately 10 years old and as far as I know NEVER washed or waxed.

    I plan on...
    • 2 bucket wash
    •Clay
•Ultimate Compound | Porter Cable 7424XP | Chemical Guys Orange Pad
•Ultimate Polish | Porter Cable 7424XP | Chemical Guys Green Pad
    •Paint Protect 365 by hand

I looked at the car yesterday to plan ahead and noticed it has two 1/8" thin parallel black pinstripes that run the length of the car. They seem to be vinyl stickers. They are above the paint surface for sure. I have never done a car with pinstripes.

    • Should I just avoid them?
    • Should I tape them off?
    • Would it be best to remove them?
    • If removing them is the safest way... how do I do it?

Any help would be VERY appreciated.

If in doubt, tape them off for the compounding and polishing steps.

This will avoid possibly damaging them, but also having to get polish/wax residue out from around the edges of them.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

I had a similar issue on my Chrysler Town & Country that's 8 yrs old. Sticker type pinstripes. I personally do not recommend taping over them either, as they may pull off as you take the tape off.

I would just avoid them especially when it comes to compounding them, or at least try in an inconspicuous place to see if it'll take off the color. I ended up even avoiding claying them. As it started to take them off a little. It still came out fantastic, i just spent a little extra time not going over them.
