Hey guys, I'm trying to start getting better at detailing. I'm about to remove all the wax from my 2001 Mustang GT and clay bar, ultimate compound, ultimate polish, then ultimate wax it. I'm wondering if I really need to purchase a buffer or if I can get good results by hand. It is Oxford White so the swirl marks and hard water stains are there but not too noticeable.

I would invest in a DA. Your arms will thank you later. In addition to saving time. It's worth the money.

There are quite a few people who get the harbor freight DA due to the low cost (~$60). It is recommended to get a better backing plate and pads.

What sort of condition is the paint in and what are you trying to achieve?
If you just want to shine it up a bit and remove some of the defects, then it's possible to get pretty good results by hand (albeit still a lot of work).
If the paint looks like most 'normal' 14 year old paint would, and you want a show car shine, you'll be needing a machine.
The Meguiar's DAs are a good machine.Originally posted by BluelineI own a silver vehicle and a black vehicle owns me. The black one demands attention, washing, detailing, waxing and an occasional dinner out at a nice restaurant. The silver one demands nothing and it looks just fine. I think the black vehicle is taking advantage of me, and the silver car is more my style. We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Here is a pretty good package from Autogeek.
Autogeek is your number one car care source for auto detailing supplies, the best car wax, car care products, car polishes, auto accessories, polishers, and car detailing tools store.
You could wait for one of their sales (they happen almost every week) to get it cheaper if you become a member.
However, the pad cleaner is optional IMO, so it may work out cheaper if you buy all the other items separately.
I'm pretty sure Auto Detailing Solutions, Detailed Image, Autoality etc etc would all have packages too..Originally posted by BluelineI own a silver vehicle and a black vehicle owns me. You can do this
-DA
- 20% coupon (search for coupon online)
- New foam discs with backing plate (http://www.autodetailingsolutions.ne...ch-bundle.html)
Should cost you roughly $140-$150.
If you want to save a little more cash then this would work as well.
Should set you back about $120-$130
If it's not in your budget then just do it by hand.
